Yamaha MOTOROiD2 concept wins Red Dot Award

MANILA: Yamaha’s MOTOROiD2 concept was awarded the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2025 honors. 

This is the fifth time the Japanese motorcycle company has won the Design Concept category. Below are Yamaha’s prototypes that won the said accolade: 

• &Y01 - an electrically power-assisted wheelchair that plays music (2017)
• MOTOROiD - a machine that “acts like a living creature” (2018)
• YNF-01 - a low-speed electric mobility scooter concept model (2019)
• E-plegona - an interactive installation that creates ‘Kando’ through intuitive physical and non-verbal communication by both players (2024)

The Yamaha MOTOROiD2 concept is an evolution of the original MOTOROiD listed above. The concept was envisioned to be a “lifetime companion” and aims to generate two-way responses between it and its owner; thus, the design evolved in a more organic and emotional direction.

According to Yamaha, the prototype uses an organic, semi-transparent exterior to give it a friendly appearance. In addition, the entire chassis functions as an interface, expressing the bike’s “emotions” through light, touch, and movement. 

Further, the Yamaha MOTOROiD2 concept has a “LEAF” haptic device in the center of the chassis, which allows for non-verbal communication with the user through one’s sense of touch and sight.

“These features deepen the rider's sensory connection with the bike, achieving a futuristic, mutually responding design that sets it apart from conventional motorcycles,” Yamaha wrote in a press release.
