Suzuki Philippines Incorporated (SPH) has already introduced the Burgman 15 to the local market. It is a crucial nameplate for the company, as it slots into the highly competitive 150-cubic-centimeter automatic motorcycle segment. The Philippines is likewise the first in ASEAN to carry the Burgman 15. 

Notably, the nameplate also carries the “Burgman” moniker, and as of this publication, it now sits between the entry-level Burgman Street and the Burgman 400. On that note, there is no doubt it has already captured the attention of would-be adopters, since its smaller and larger siblings have gained ground locally. 

But does the all-new Suzuki Burgman 15 have any weaknesses? Also, what are its particular strengths? Let’s find out here. 

Pros

Efficient powertrain

One of the key strengths of the Suzuki Burgman 15 is its powertrain. Specifically, it has a World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC) -indicated efficiency rating of 43.6 kilometers per liter (kpl). This makes it comparable to the Yamaha Nmax, which has a WMTC rating of 43 kpl, and just a midge below the Honda ADV 160, which has a WMTC rating of 45 kpl. 

This is great, considering that the Suzuki Burgman 15’s four-stroke, single overhead cam, two-valve engine can produce 14.21 horsepower and 14.2 Newton-meters of torque - comparable figures to many of its closest competitors. 

Other noteworthy mechanical components of the Suzuki Burgman 15 include a telescopic front fork and a sub-tank rear suspension. It also uses front and rear disc brakes that are paired with an anti-lock braking system. 

Furthermore, the model utilizes an injected fuel system, liquid cooling, a transistorized electronic ignition system, an electronic starting system, and an eight-liter fuel tank.

Convenient and smart

Another strength of the all-new Burgman 15 is its wide array of features that will make commuting and daily rides easier and more convenient. 

Chief among these is a full-color digital TFT display, which is great for legibility in any weather. This goes together with a tire pressure monitoring system - a crucial tool for ensuring safe rides and eliminating the need to manually check if one’s tires have the right air pressure. 

Likewise useful is its intelligent key system, which allows users to remotely lock and unlock the bike. This also comes with an anti-theft system (alarm) and an answer-back feature. The latter can be a great time-saver for those who regularly park at establishments with dedicated (but heavily used) motorcycle parking areas. With a simple press of the button, the motorcycle can activate its lamps, making it easy to stop in a sea of other parked motorcycles. 

Also notable are the Burgman 15’s traction control and dual ABS system- must-haves for the busy and often chaotic streets of the Philippine driving setting. And of course, there’s the Burgman 15’s engine automatic stop-start system, which is helpful in saving gasoline, especially during these times where oil prices can dramatically rocket upwards at the drop of a hat. 

Other nifty amenities present on the Suzuki-made 150-cc motorcycle also include: 

• Top box-ready rear carrier
• Easy access front fuel lid
• Passing light and hazard lamp switch
• 25-liter underseat storage
• Type C charging ports (underseat and glove box)

Premium levels of style

Given that the Suzuki Burgman is a 150-cc automatic motorcycle, one can guess it is priced rather modestly. Then again, the nameplate does have some details that make it appear that it punches above its segment. 

Key to these is its Hayabusa-inspired face, which is equipped with a triple-LED headlamp setup. This is paired with flexible turn signal lamps and a sharp-looking rear end. 

On a more practical note, the model comes with what Suzuki has dubbed as “premium seats.” It offers loads of space for the rider and a pillion passenger, and it is shaped ergonomically for optimal comfort even on long rides. 

Completing the premium appearance of the Burgman 15 are a pair of 14-inch wheels. 

Cons

Ground clearance a little lacking

The Suzuki Burgman 15 doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses, but we feel that its 135 millimeters of ground clearance is a bit lacking. 

Sure, it isn’t the lowest amount, considering other models in the segment only have 125 mm, but its ground clearance may be a little too close for comfort on the typical speed bumps we see in places like Metro Manila. 

Final thoughts

With a suggested retail price of P165,000, the Suzuki Burgman 15 comes in a neat, attractive, and well-equipped package that’s well worth the money. It has plenty of useful tools and features to make riding more convenient, plus a highly efficient powertrain that doesn’t compromise on power. 

On the one hand, its one weakness can be addressed with careful riding and maybe a bit of route planning. So, for those serious about getting a brand-new 150-cc automatic motorcycle, do consider giving the Suzuki Burgman 15 a test ride to see for yourself how it feels to pilot.
