Recent Updates of Suzuki Ertiga

The MPV segment in the Philippines is very hotly contested and the presence of the Suzuki Ertiga is just a boon. The latest model of the car made a world debut at the Indonesia International Motor Show in 2018 and has a new design and a good list of updated technology.

The present generation of the Suzuki Ertiga is powered by a 1.4-litre motor which can put out a maximum power of 95 PS at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 130 Nm, which comes at 4,000 rpm. Power is sent down to the wheels via a 5-speed manual in the two lower trims while the top trims have the 4-speed automatic.

Overview

The MPV segment in the country is booming. MPVs like the Toyota Avanza and Honda Mobilio have become regular sights on the roads today. But the Suzuki Ertiga has been hiding in plain sight all this time. The no-nonsense MPV has been a very good performer since it was launched more than 5 years ago in the country. Since then it has received only one major upgrade. And yet it is still just as powerful a contender in the segment today. It was Suzuki’s bestselling car in the market last year and contributed 34 percent share to their total sales. But with a new generation model slowly making its way towards us, it does deserve another look before it’s gone. The Suzuki Ertiga is available in the country in 4 variants – base GA with a manual and GL with a manual or an automatic and the top of the line GLX with an automatic - all with the same 1.4L engine. Armed with nice driving characteristics, spacious seating and very competitive pricing, it remains one of the most preferred MPVs in the market today.

Interior & Features

Suzuki engineers had their sights set on creating more room inside the Ertiga when they set about configuring the interior. Every element adds to the sense of space and creates room even at a psychological level. Just bear with me here. The interior is bathed in nice feeling plastics and fabric - all of which is in beige. Although boring, it does create a greater sense of space than, say black. The airy ambience created by the large windows creates even more space while filling the cabin with light. Headroom is also massive thanks to the tall nature of the car. The first two rows have ample legroom and with less than 5 passengers, there is enough space for luggage. Add a few more people and then a choice needs to be made between cargo space and legroom. This is something that should be expected in an MPV with a 5+2 setup. Even so the third row seats can only really be populated by people of a shorter height. Thankfully they fold flat very easily and are 50:50 split foldable. This makes them good for storage. The second row seats are similarly 60: 40 foldable, can fold flat and can slide to create more leg room. The interior is also lifted from the Swift and is surprisingly well equipped for the price. There are roof mounted air conditioner vents with their own cooling coils but use recirculated air. There is very little noise coming in from outside. Except for the base model, all others get touchscreen infotainment systems with navigation. The GLX gets one with Android Auto allowing you to use your phone’s apps in the car. This is a feature which hasn’t becomes available in many more modern cars and yet we can find it here. All except the base model also get 4 speakers and the GLX also gets steering mounted controls for the audio. Adding to the practicality are two power outlets and a height adjustable driver seat. Not a very bad effort at all.

Exterior

Let’s be honest, the Ertiga is not the best looking MPV. The new one does a much better job on that front but the current one seems pretty lackluster. The Ertiga is based on the Suzuki Swift platform that is slightly extended. But not improbably so. Its 4265 mm length, 1695 mm width and 1685 mm height with a wheelbase length of 2740 mm make it very easy to park in the city. It even manages to be slightly bigger than the Toyota Avanza. Ground clearance at 185 mm also adds to its city sensibilities. The Ertiga gets 15” wheels wearing 185/65 tires all around. The base model, however, gets steel rims and misses out on the electrically folding mirrors (available on the GL and GLX) and chrome front fog lamp surround (GLX only). Other than the fog light surround, all three cars are identical styling wise.  And by identical we mean plain looking. There is nothing excessive on the Ertiga. No line strays too far. No bulge is too big. Just some clean lines, upswept Swift inspired headlights and a chrome grille. The shape of the car is very aerodynamic and the thin A-pillars give it good visibility. It somehow also does not look too tall despite its actual height. But there are no LEDs and no DRLs either. Although frankly you won’t miss them too badly.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

Yes, the engine also comes from the Swift. It’s the 1.4 L K14B, 4 cylinders 16 valve DOHC with multi-point fuel injection and VVT. Producing peak power of 91 hp at 6000 rpm and peak torque 130 Nm at 4000 rpm, it comes with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. While the power might feel insufficient especially when fully loaded with 7 passengers, with 4 passengers it is nothing to worry about. Even still the 10.7 kmpl average fuel economy figure should excite the average buyer. Much like everything else, the driving experience is also like the Swift. Being a Suzuki, driving the Ertiga is very pleasing. Being longer and taller than the Swift, there is a slight hint of body roll when taking corners too hard – an improbability in the MPV world. It performs well on highway speeds giving a planted feel and absorbing the vagaries of the road. City driving is also handled very well especially when taking tight corners and narrow streets.

Braking & Safety

For a car built to a price, you cannot expect a lot of safety equipment. Proving the point, the Ertiga is equipped with just dual front airbags seat belts (lap seat belt for the second row) and ISOFIX. The GLX is the only variant that comes with ABS and EBD. There is nothing in terms of driver aids other than this. In fact, the Ertiga has an ASEAN NCAP rating of only 4 stars while the competition often leaves it behind. Not something that will be appreciated by many modern buyers.

Verdict

Pricing for the Ertiga starts at Php 699000 for the base GA, jumps to around Php 850000 for the GL and goes up to Php 965000 for the best equipped with Php 965000. This puts it right in between the Php 8000000 to Php 1 million price range that all its main competitors fall in. While its competitors perform much better in many areas than the Ertiga, this price advantage is unbeatable. And the Ertiga is not exactly a bad car. It has nice driving characteristics, generous interior space, and is affordable to buy and live with.  Many of its competitors also have the same issues that the Ertiga faces so the comparison is not exactly fair. This is probably why the Ertiga has been performing so well in the country. So, if you need a cheap MPV for 5 people, you know which one to buy.

    The brand name is enough

Suzuki cars are always the best cars in any segment. I do like Honda and other brands but I absolutely love Suzuki just because of the sheer quality of the vehicles. When I was about to buy a new car, I was confused between the Honda BR-V and Suzuki Ertiga. I eventually chose the Ertiga because of many reasons. Firstly, Read More
