However, its “e-Boxer Hybrid” designation belies its electrified powertrain, and that’s something many Pinoy buyers find somewhat attractive nowadays.
But what exactly is it about the Subaru Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid that makes it a compelling buy? In other words, are there any particular reasons to get this Subie? Let’s find out here.

Tried, tested AWD-Boxer combo
Contrary to many other all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrids and electric vehicles in the market right now, the Subaru Crosstrek with the e-Boxer powertrain doesn’t come attached to a dual motor setup. Instead, it uses a mechanical AWD system.
Photo by Cesar Guiderone MiguelNotably, the electric-motor-derived AWD system that is becoming common on electrified rides does have its advantages. They are quicker to respond due to having all-electric controls, instantaneous torque, and superior packaging, but mechanical AWD, especially Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD, has a proven track record for durability.
Additionally, people who are used to traditional AWD cars won’t have to adjust as much when it comes to the Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid, as its power delivery may be more predictable and more familiar.
Maintaining a mechanical AWD system may also be easier for most mechanics. This is because it has less reliance on software, which in turn requires specialized tools to diagnose and fix.
As a disclaimer, the Subaru Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid isn’t a full-on off-roader, but it is said to be highly capable for dealing with slippery surfaces like mud or waterlogged roads. Additionally, it is still able to provide a punchy torque delivery due to its electric motor.
For reference, the Philippine-spec Subaru Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid uses a 2.0-liter boxer four engine - a rarity in the current market. Sure, its peak output of 153 horsepower and 196 Newton-meters of torque isn’t the strongest in its segment, but it does provide a unique sound that is enjoyable for many gearheads.
Photo by Cesar Guiderone MiguelPaired with the engine is a lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT), a regenerative braking system, and an electric-only mode.
Other relevant mechanical bits of the aforementioned Subie include a 48-liter fuel tank, a front MacPherson strut, and rear double wishbone suspension setup with stabilizer bars, as well as front and rear disc brakes.
All of the aforementioned are integrated into the e-Subaru Global Platform, which it shares with the Forester e-Boxer Hybrid.
Proven safety features
Besides its powertrain and drivetrain, the Subaru Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid likewise carried over the Japanese brand’s well-known EyeSight suite of advanced driver-assist systems.
Specifically, it uses EyeSight 4.0, which includes a new front-mounted wide-angle camera. This complements the system’s old dual-camera setup and is said to provide the car with better object detection capabilities.
Photo by Cesar Guiderone MiguelWorking with its autonomous emergency braking and pre-collision braking systems, the improved camera setup on the Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid will be a huge boon for drivers in areas like Metro Manila or Cebu City. It may even see good use in the provinces, where roads are quieter and less populated, so untimely surprises (like the erring motorcyclist or even a carabao) may catch you off guard.
Long road trips on highways like the North Luzon Expressway and the South Luzon Expressway will also be easier (and feel more secure) thanks to the car’s lane departure prevention system. This works by applying just the right amount of steering intervention to prevent unintentional lane drifting. At the same time, driver fatigue is reduced on the Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid, as it comes standard with adaptive cruise control.
Furthermore, emergencies caused by prolonged lack of steering or driver input are also made less harrowing thanks to an Emergency Driving Stop System. The aforementioned feature enables the car to gently come to a complete, safe stop on its own.
Photo by Cesar Guiderone MiguelLast but not least is the model’s 360-degree view camera, which is undoubtedly essential when dealing with tight parking spots in the city.
The vehicle’s passive set of safety gear, meanwhile, includes nine airbags, anti-lock braking, a rollover-safe cabin, collision detection unlock, vehicle dynamics control, and hill-descent control - among others.
Creature comforts galore
Like its ICE sibling, the all-new Subaru Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid still has loads of creature comforts.
For starters, the electrified model’s five-seater layout was kitted out with a dual-zone automatic climate control system, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a power sunroof.
Photo by Cesar Guiderone MiguelHandling on-board entertainment and navigation for the said nameplate is an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This is paired with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
Other noteworthy features inside the Subaru Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid include, but are not limited to:
- 10-watt wireless smartphone charging pad
- USB ports
- Harman Kardon sound system
- Leather upholstery
- Tilt and telescopic steering wheel
- Driver’s lumbar support
- 60:40 split-folding rear seat
- Electronic parking brake with auto vehicle hold
- Push-to-start button
Moreover, the model offers up to 1,297 liters of cargo space with the rear seats folded down. This immense trunk is more than enough for most outdoor gear, such as tents and sleeping bags. It may also prove invaluable for those with pets, or those who like to go on roadtrips with a lot of luggage.

Final thoughts
With a price of P1.998 million, the Subaru Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid is a steal, well, at least for a Crosstrek. It is, after all, slightly more affordable than the top-spec 2.0i-S EyeSight GT and the mid-spec 2.0i-S EyeSight.
Photo by Cesar Guiderone MiguelGranted, it isn’t as sport-looking as those two, but it does come with additional goodies as mentioned above. Specifically, it has the advantage of having an electric-powered assist drive and a better ADAS suite.
So, if you like what you see in the Crosstrek e-Boxer Hybrid, do visit the nearest Subaru dealership and ask for a test drive.
