AccessiWheels in need of drivers to ferry frontline workers

MANILA: What was a startup business in 2018 under the Innovation Hub program of the University of the Philippines-Diliman and Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is now using its resources to assist frontline workers and even non-COVID-19 patients affected by the pandemic.

Called AccessiWheels, this program uses technology to connect people with mobility problems to trained drivers and, if needed, with accessible vehicles, to get them where they need to go.

After the government restricted movement of the population during the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), AccessiWheels has expanded its program and have now been assisting healthcare and frontline workers, along with regular clients since March 20, 2020.

"AccessiWheels is a social enterprise which enables people with mobility problems to go where they need to. We connect customers to trained drivers. For our volunteer project in response to COVID-19 pandemic, the ride is free. We only give cash to the drivers for (the) gas and alcohol," said AccessiWheels chief operating officer Eva Parreño.

Healthcare/frontline workers and/or patients can get a free ride even if they are alone. If there are two passengers who do not come from the same social group, they can still be accommodated but physical distancing must be observed.

Currently, AccessiWheels only has 12 drivers servicing Quezon City, Caloocan, Makati, Marikina, Manila, Las Piñas, Mandaluyong, Pasay, Bacoor, Batangas, and Laguna. Due to the high demand for rides, they are in dire need of volunteer drivers.

"AccessiWheels is hoping there will be more volunteer drivers who are genuinely interested to help out, who are committed, and who are willing to do it for free," added Parreño.

Despite their limitation, AccessiWheels continues to offer free rides. If you need one, message them on Facebook, send them an SMS or Viber message at 09667018452. Include your name, contact details, pick up and drop off points, date and time the service is needed, and also include a medical certificate and barangay certificate.
