All-new Audi RS 5 Avant PHEV debuts for PH

MANILA: PGA Cars Incorporated, the official distributor of Audi in the Philippines, has unveiled the RS 5 Avant plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). 

The aforementioned nameplate is a wagon (Avant) that boasts the brand’s first-ever high-performance PHEV powertrain. Moreover, the platform is touted to have genuine “RS DNA.” This means a highly daily-drivable car that can also become a fun backroads carver. 

Powertrain

Propelling the Audi RS 5 Avant PHEV is a 2.9-liter TFSI V6 gasoline engine. This is paired with a PHEV system, the German marque’s famous quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system, an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission, and a self-locking center differential.

At maximum, the Audi RS 5 Avant PHEV can produce up to 639 horsepower (hp) and 825 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. It also has an 83-kilometer electric-only range. With this amount of oomph, the German marque says that it can reach a top speed of 285 kilometers per hour (kph). 

Handling stability and ride quality are provided by an RS-spec suspension system with controlled two-valve dampers. This goes together with its stiffened unibody structure, as well as reinforced underchassis components, specifically its rubber bushings and control arms.

A rather unique mechanical component of this nameplate is a “clean-sheet rear axle” in order to accommodate the presence of a battery and a rear-mounted drive motor. This, per Audi, was developed as a nearly bespoke part for the dark in order to handle “extreme longitudinal and lateral physics.” 

In addition, the all-new RS 5 Avant PHEV also has an RS-specific exhaust system, as well as ventilated steel disc rotors and RS-branded brake calipers.

Exterior

For its exterior, the Audi RS 5 Avant PHEV’s key visual elements include a wide body kit with aggressive track widths, combined with a lot of functional aerodynamic bits. These include functional air curtains, huge air intakes on either side of its grille, a roof-mounted spoiler, and a very chunky rear diffuser. 

Notably, the rear diffuser surrounds a functional dual tailpipe exhaust system (RS exhaust). Completing the appearance of the model are a set of 21-inch cast aluminum wheels, OLED taillights, darkened matrix LED headlamps, and roof rails. 

Also present on the car are a panoramic sunroof, power-folding/adjusatble side mirrors with memory, and a headlight cleaning system. 

Interior

Inside the Audi RS 5 Avant PHEV is a five-seater layout that balances a driver-centric design with comfort and practicality. 

For the driver, the vehicle provides a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, the Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus, a head-up display, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and sport seats. The driver’s seat is also power-adjustable, while all seats are upholstered, but only the front seats get a massage and ventilation function and a pneumatically adjustable lumbar support system. 

Everyone inside the car is cooled by a triple-zone automatic climate control system, while mood inside the vehicle is enhanced by the Audi Ambient Lighting Package Pro. 

Handling on-board entertainment and navigation inside the RS 5 Avant PHEV is a 14.5-inch display that is seamlessly linked to its digital gauge cluster. It can provide wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, while sound output is dished out by a Bang & Olufsen 3D speaker set. 

Safety

Safety-wise, the Audi RS 5 Avant PHEV depends on a combination of active and passive equipment. 

On the passive side, it has dual front airbags, side airbags, a head airbag, and a front interaction airbag. These are complemented by an electronic engine immobilizer, tire pressure monitoring, anti-lock braking, and electronic stability control, among others. 

Its active safety components, on the other hand, consist of the following: 

• Adaptive cruise control 
• Adaptive Driving Assistant Plus
• Parking Assistance Package
• Emergency brake assist front and rear
• Lane departure warning with emergency assist
• 360-degree surround view camera
• Front cross-traffic assist
• Front emergency brake assist
• Swerve and turn assist
• Side assist
• Rear-cross traffic assist 
• Rear turn assist

Pricing for the Audi RS 5 Avant PHEV can be requested from PGA Cars Incorporated. Moreover, the company shared that examples of the high-performance PHEV will enter the country starting in the fourth quarter of the year, although reservations are now open. 

In addition, the Audi distributor said its sedan will also be launched in the market soon.
