BYD Cars PH recalls Shark 6 DMO over spare tire lifter assembly issue

MANILA: BYD Cars Philippines is recalling the Philippine-market Shark 6 Dual-Mode Off-Road (DMO)  to address a potential issue involving its spare tire lifter assembly.

The ACMobility-led automotive distributor issued a service campaign advisory stating that the component needs to be upgraded at no cost to owners.

In its advisory, BYD Cars Philippines instructed owners who had previously removed and reinstalled their spare tires to remove them from their respective mounts. Meanwhile, no action is required for units whose spare tires have never been removed.

“Please expect a BYD Dealer Representative to contact you once the updated part becomes available,” the brand’s Philippine distributor added.

At the time of writing, BYD Cars Philippines has yet to disclose the number of affected Shark 6 DMO units in the country. To note, the model officially entered the local market in March 2025.

This follows a similar advisory issued overseas, specifically in New Zealand, involving the same model. According to the advisory, under certain circumstances, incorrect installation or positioning of the spare wheel tray, or insufficient fastening torque, may cause abnormal wear of the spare wheel support cable. This, in turn, could cause the spare wheel to detach.

“This may create a hazard to other road users and potentially cause serious injury or death,” BYD New Zealand noted.
