Ford to face USD 4 bn lawsuit for lying about faulty transmission
MANILA: The American auto giant, Ford might be facing a potential lawsuit of USD 4 billion (around PHP 209 billion) for lying about the faulty PowerShift dual-clutch transmission. Reportedly, instead of accepting its fault, Ford kept blaming drivers for the problems.
According to the reports, over 1.9 million customers are unhappy with the manufacturer’s behaviour. They mention that the transmissions were prone to slipping, shuddering, hesitation, jerking, bucking when the driver changes the gear. On the other hand, the acceleration was delayed in some cases.
Previously, the carmaker had settled a class-action lawsuit recently about the faulty transmissions by paying USD 35 million (around PHP 1.8 billion). A nonprofit consumer group based in Washington DC mentioned that it is a sweet deal for the carmakers and a raw one for the customers.
Auto Safety’s executive director of the Center, Jason Levine said that more than thousands of Ford owners have lodged complaints about the transmission problems in its vehicles. And the manufacturer has not even behaved well with the owners and did not rectify it.
Ford has recognized the problem and released a statement saying, “We took too long to identify the issues and we acknowledge that PowerShift customers did not have complaints handled appropriately. We were overwhelmed with the volume of complaints. Our processes were inadequate and information provided was either inaccurate or incomplete. We let our customers down and for that we are sorry.”
