Hummer might just make a comeback in the form of an EV

MANILA: Times couldn’t have been better for an automobile manufacturer to bring out a brand new SUV or maybe bring back a discontinued nameplate, right? With the SUV segment ballooning rapidly and the demand for electric SUVs also on the rise, General Motors, the American automobile manufacturer is actually considering the rebirth of one of the most sought after SUVs of its time, Hummer. However, as the Hummer was highly criticised for its hunger for fuel, the automaker wants to bring the nameplate back in the form of an all-electric SUV.

In the plan proposed by CEO Mary Barra, the company should be moving forward with emphasizing on diversification. By diversification, the motive is to build more electric vehicles along with the vehicles that use conventional internal combustion engines. Hence,

the return of the Hummer nameplate will only do good for the automaker in gaining attention in the automobile space. “I love Hummer but I'm not sure. We're looking at everything”, said GM president Mark Reuss who is not particularly enticed by the plan of bringing the Hummer back as an EV.

Interestingly, even if General Motors decides to make an electric Hummer, it won’t be the first Hummer EV. The reason being Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the most prolific Hollywood actors already having one in his garage. In 2017, the actor displayed his Hummer that was converted into an EV by an Austrian electric vehicle expert, Kriesel.

The electric Hummer owned by Arnold Schwarzenegger gets its power from two electric motors which produce 490 PS of maximum power and provide the SUV with a top speed of 120 kmph. Furthermore, the motors get their fluids from a 100 kWh battery pack and as a result, the SUV carries a range of 300 km.

While General Motors can join hands with Kreisel and move forward with the idea of an all-electric Hummer, we believe that the American automaker would rather like to focus on its own EV batteries and platforms that it is currently developing.
