Toyota starts sale of Land Cruiser FJ in Japan

MANILA: Toyota Motor Company Limited has started the sale of the Land Cruiser FJ in Japan.

Per the Japanese carmaker, the said model was developed with the aim of allowing even more customers to effortlessly enjoy the Land Cruiser.

Designed under the theme “Freedom and Joy,” the goal was to create a vehicle that allows customers with diverse lifestyles to embrace the freedom to go anywhere and enrich their lives with a variety of joyful experiences. 

As such, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ offers an easy-to-handle size while retaining the essence of the Land Cruiser (reliability, durability, and off-road performance), which has supported people’s lives for many years.

It joins the three existing Toyota Land Cruiser-badged vehicles, namely the Land Cruiser 300, 70, and 250.

Here is a quick look at the specifications of the Japanese-market Toyota Land Cruiser FJ:

Powertrain, chassis

Under the hood of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is a 2.7-liter gasoline engine that makes 160 horsepower and 246 Newton-meters of torque with a fuel efficiency of 8.7 kilometers per liter.

The powerplant is mated to a six-speed super electronically controlled transmission (Super ECT), which helps maintain smooth acceleration while improving fluidity in everyday situations, such as starting off and low-speed driving, as well as vehicle speed controllability on downhill slopes. 

Supporting the SUV’s traditional ladder-frame structure is a high-mount double wishbone setup at the fore, and a four-link rigid with lateral rod suspensions at the rear. The pair was selected for their outstanding performance in various driving situations, such as off-road and on-road driving.

“As an off-roader that allows users to drive with confidence and freedom on any terrain, the FJ series features a highly durable and reliable ladder frame structure. It delivers excellent off-road performance through superior wheel articulation (maintaining tire contact with the ground) and achieves outstanding mobility through a shortened wheelbase,” Toyota Motor Company Limited wrote in a press release.

“Furthermore, a 2.7-liter gasoline engine has been paired with a 6 Super ECT transmission to deliver smooth driving performance and high reliability, ensuring ease of use in everyday situations like on-road driving while still maintaining off-road performance,” it added.

Exterior

Outside, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ follows a silhouette that emphasizes a square cabin, taking into consideration the habitability and cargo capacity that successive generations of Land Cruisers have prioritized.

Notable are its U-shaped headlights and rear combination lights. 

As such, the front view fully integrates all functional parts to emphasize its sharp design, while the side view uses a lowered horizontal beltline, allowing better driver visibility of the road surface even when off-roading.

Its standard equipment includes roof rails that combine functionality and design for transporting outdoor gear and long items that won't fit inside the cabin, side steps to assist with getting in and out, and a skid plate under the front to protect the engine and transmission when driving off the beaten path.

Rounding off its exterior appointments is a Toyota logo and rear-mounted spare tire reminiscent of previous Land Cruiser models.

The Japan-market Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is available in five monotone body colors, including Smoky Blue and Oxide Bronze Metallic.

“The design retains the Land Cruiser’s traditional square cabin, which prioritizes habitability and cargo capacity, while incorporating elements of fun such as its iconic dice motif. It features a compact size and design that makes it easy to get a feel for the vehicle's dimensions, delivering excellent mobility and maneuverability,” the company noted.

“Furthermore, the design allows customers to customize the vehicle freely, with accessories also available to help them tailor it to their liking,” it stated.

Interior

The cabin was designed to achieve a cockpit layout that enables instant recognition and steering across a wide range of driving conditions.

On that note, the driver is provided with a horizontal instrument panel that makes it easy to recognize the vehicle posture, a monitor and switches that consolidate functions to minimize eye movement, and a shift knob that allows natural operation. 

A low-set cowl and instrument panel help the driver achieve good forward visibility, contributing to safe on- and off-road driving. Nestled at the center of the dashboard is a 12.3-inch display audio system with connected navigation support.

Occupants get to rest on a two-row, five-seat layout with a 6:4 split second-row seat that slides forward and backward, reclines, and includes seat backboards.

Boot space is capable of accommodating up to 795 liters of luggage.

Safety

When it comes to safety, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is equipped with standard technologies like a panoramic view monitor and a blind spot monitor. It also comes with the Toyota Safety Sense, an active safety package with advanced functions including the pre-collision safety system and lane departure alert.

Custom accessories

Per Toyota Motor Company Limited, the Land Cruiser FJ will be available in Japan with dealer-installed options to let customers personalize luggage space and exterior to their liking.

These include the “Playful Set,” which comes with a hood decal, side decal, spare tire decal, and molle panels for its side and rear door. 

Likewise, ARB exterior parts are also available as Toyota genuine parts and accessories. These include a roof rack, skid plate, and rock rail.

“The arrival of the FJ series offers a new option within the Land Cruiser lineup that caters to a wider range of lifestyles and usage scenarios. Under Toyota’s “To You” concept, the Land Cruiser will continue to evolve to meet societal demands while supporting the lives of customers around the world and remaining a vehicle they can trust,” the car manufacturer explained.

Land Hopper

To complement the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, the company plans to make the Land Hopper — an electric personal mobility vehicle that will allow users to experience the joy of off-road riding on trails, going beyond where the Land Cruiser can take them. 

The Toyota Land Hopper can be stored in a vehicle’s luggage area.

It is scheduled to be launched next year.
