The only 5-seater compact crossover in Toyota’s lineup in the Philippines, the current generation RAV4 is a huge departure from its first generation boxy looking model which debuted back in 1994. Wearing an all-new design language which looks much sharper and angular, the RAV4 is an answer from Toyota for all those who wanted the reliability and sturdiness of a Toyota SUV, but with a smaller footprint and an economical price point. Available in both 4x2 and 4x4 versions, the RAV4 is being offered in a sole engine option of a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which for the Philippines, only gets paired with the 6-speed automatic transmission.

Interior & Features

On the inside, Toyota has decided to play safe for the RAV4, which is why the overall dashboard layout isn’t as radical looking as the exterior design. The overall cabin design looks a bit MPV-ish, with the dashboard having a straight and modest design to it. However, that doesn’t mean that it looks odd and dated.

The three-spoke steering wheel has been lifted off from the similarly priced Toyotas such as Corolla, with buttons for audio, Bluetooth and instrument cluster adjustments on it. The round dials with a large colored MID screen within the instrument console look nice and premium too. The AC vents on the corners are round and big, which look a bit odd though.

The center console has a minimalist appeal to it, with a high mounted 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system sitting between the vertical AC vents, which do get its controls placed below the touchscreen unit in an angular way. The overall cabin is quite spacious, for the RAV4 gets an appreciable wheelbase of 2660 mm.

Given its segment, the RAV4 is properly equipped with all the essentials such as power folding and adjustable rear view mirrors, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering, reverse camera, push-button start with keyless entry, height adjustable driver’s seat and automatic climate control, to justify its premium appeal.

As compared to all the globally available previous generation models, the current generation RAV4 looks sharp and angular, thanks to an all-new design language which comes in line with the rest of Toyota’s cars.

At the front, the RAV4 gets a super sleek front grille, where the thin T-shaped gloss black grille with the Toyota’s logo in between gets sweptback headlamps at both of its ends. The headlamp units here, like all the rest of the modern Toyotas, get LED projector units with daytime running LEDs incorporated within them. The front bumper has been busily styled with the conventional round fog lamps completing the frontal stance.

From the sides, the RAV4 has a rather simple stance with a nice chrome detailing running throughout the beltline beneath the side windows, adding a premium touch to the otherwise sporty stance of the crossover. Again, to add in some more premium-ness, the RAV4 gets diamond cut alloy wheels – a modern trait in all premium crossovers and SUVs. To add in some butch appeal, the RAV4 does get a noticeable black cladding which extends from the front to rear.

At the rear, the RAV4 carries forward the radical appeal of the front with sleek LED tail lamps which are reminiscent to that of the Fortuner, thus falling in the family line. Though the rear spoiler and roof rails add to the sportiness of the RAV4, the large housing for the number plate looks a bit odd and out-of-place.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

For the Philippines market, the Toyota RAV4 gets the very refined and powerful 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which here on the RAV4 produces a maximum power output of 180 bhp and a peak torque output of 233 Nm. Paired to only a 6-speed automatic transmission with super ECT, the engine feels quick and refined from the word go and has a punchy midrange and top end grunt. The crossover is meant to be driven on the tarmac for most of the times, however, Toyota is offering an optional 4x4 variant in case you want to have fun off the tarmac as well.

Braking & Safety

Toyota is well known for not compromising on the factor of safety for its products, and the RAV4 is no exception as well. The RAV4 is being offered with all the safety features as standard across all the variants, the list of which includes front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors and Vehicle Stability Control. However, we would have liked to see more sophisticated active safety features which are available there in the competition, something which its face-lifted model might come equipped with.

With the RAV4, Toyota is offering its hereditary SUV lineage in a much smaller 5-seater form – a lineage which is well known globally for its reliability and comfort. The SUV looks radical from the outside and has an air of modernity attached to it, even after the fact that the RAV4 is in the market now for quite a long time. However, it is the interior cabin which looks pale in comparison to the extrovert exteriors and needs an overhaul both in terms of features and layout. The engine, as well as ride and handling package, feel smooth and refined and powerful enough to adapt to any kind of driving experience. Overall, the RAV4 is for all those who want the toughness of a Toyota SUV, but with a smaller footprint and equally premium appeal.

I have a big family of seven, which made travelling together a difficult task. When I got promoted last year and got a hefty bonus I decided to put an end to this issue by choosing the ravishing Toyota RAV4. This SUV gives me tremendous driving pleasure and is very smooth on the road. The Toyota tag brings with it, Read More

    Appropriate For Small Family

It has been just a week that I have brought the new RAV4 home. Frankly, I was in love with the RAV4 from the past couple of years, but the family wasn’t convinced. Everyone thought that I should go for the larger and more premium Fortuner, since the price difference wasn’t really huge. But I believe for a smaller family Read More
