KEY TAKEAWAYS
What is the McLaren McL 6GT and what is its historical significance?
The McL 6GT is a highly exclusive supercar debuted by McLaren Automotive at the 2026 Monterey Car Week. It is a contemporary interpretation of the original M6GT—the genesis of McLaren's road cars and founder Bruce McLaren's unfulfilled supercar dream—reimagined with six decades of modern innovation while borrowing key design elements from the original model and the M6A Can-Am racer. How does the McL 6GT prioritize the driver's connection to the car?
McLaren engineered the McL 6GT to deliver an analogue, tactile, and deeply mechanical driving experience. Key features designed to maximize driver feedback include hydraulic steering, knurled machined aluminum controls, a physical switchgear, visible engineering details, and a gear stick crafted specifically for maximum feel and throw.Dubbed the first of its kind, the automobile features design elements that connect the British luxury sports car brand’s heritage to the present.
The contemporary interpretation of the M6GT—the genesis of McLaren’s road cars and the founder’s original, but unfulfilled, supercar dream—lays the foundation for a newly positioned and highly exclusive type of McLaren.
“The McLaren McL 6GT imagines what our inspirational founder had wished to complete, but with six additional decades of innovation and passion woven through every element, creating a modern icon of driver connection,” McLaren Automotive Chief Executive Officer Nick Collins was quoted as saying.
“It is symbolic of the bold, provocative, and hugely exciting future that we are preparing to realize,” he added.

Tactile features
Per McLaren the McL 6GT delivers a form of driving connection through elements that are tactile, analogue, and deeply mechanical.
As such, it was built to make the driver feel every shift, throttle movement, and steering input. It also has hydraulic steering, a physical switchgear, and visible engineering details, which contribute to a sense of purity of involvement for the driver.
In addition, the McLaren McL 6GT is fitted with knurled machined aluminum controls and meticulous ergonomics, that reinforce the same human-machine connection, including detailing inspired by the M6GT.
Further, the gear stick was designed for maximum feel and throw.
Classic aesthetics
At the fore, the McLaren McL 6GT has a low nose and a wide stance, echoing the posture of the M6A Can-Am racer upon which the M6GT was based.
From the fascia, the vehicle boasts clean lines with uninterrupted volumes up to its Kammback tail. The roof movies naturally into the rear deck and engine cover, while the cabin appears embedded within the body rather than sitting atop it.
Per the Woking-headquartered auto manufacturer, these organic qualities, wrapped tightly around the mechanical packaging, mimic the low-drag aerodynamic conventions of the era.
The McLaren McL 6GT also sports the distinctive Racing Loop motif inspired by the M6GT’s original taillights, which are integrated into the exterior airflow architecture. Meanwhile Bruce’s McLaren’s original M6GT number plate is reimagined as a tone-on-tone graphic treatment.
Bruce’s signature adorns the engine bay, and the Speedy Kiwi—the first iconography developed from McLaren’s original logo—is discreetly etched into the fuel filler cap.
The cockpit shares the same philosophy through carefully considered details like modernized boxed quilting and an instrument cluster that retains the clarity and emotional appeal of the original.
Carbon fiber
The McLaren McL 6GT gets a handful of carbon fiber applications. One of the major use of the lightweight material is on the monocoque and bodywork.
According to McLaren, the use of light yet durable materials defines the character of the McL 6GT, delivering both performance benefits through its exceptional power to weight ratio and a clear expression of the car's philosophy.
There is also exposed gloss carbon fiber in the cabin, which references the original M6GT and McLaren's racing heritage.
