Nissan gives Tokyo Fire Department its first-ever EV ambulance
MANILA: After recently launching the Kicks globally in Thailand, Nissan went and electrified the NV400 medium-size van and made it into an EV (electric vehicle) ambulance.
Known as the Nissan NV400 Zero Emission (EV) Ambulance, it is the result of a collaboration with the Tokyo Fire Department (TFD) and Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG).
“Nissan strongly believes in sustainable mobility and strives to contribute to a world with zero emissions and zero fatalities. This project is another great example of our efforts to enhance accessibility of eco-friendly vehicles to local communities,” said Ashwani Gupta, representative executive officer and chief operation officer at Nissan.
It becomes the first-ever EV ambulance for the TFD fleet and falls right in line with the TMG’s “Zero Emission Tokyo” initiative.
The EV ambulance features an electric stretcher that makes it easy for to bring patients in and out of the unit and as it runs on a fully electric powertrain, noise and vibration levels are far lower compared to typical gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles. This is a great benefit for patients and sensitive on-board equipment.
Powering it are two 33-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery packs complemented by an additional 8-kWh battery to extend use of electrical equipment and the air- conditioning system. Maximum output is 74hp and 220Nm of torque.
The ambulance can also become a mobile source of power in case of a power outage or natural disaster.
The bodywork was done by Autoworks Kyoto in compliance with Japanese regulations and designed to meet customer needs. The ambulance package was developed by Gruau, a European emergency vehicle bodywork company.
It can accommodate a maximum of seven passengers, including the crew.
