Reconstruction of Lazatin Flyover in Pampanga to be completed this month

MANILA: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that the ongoing reconstruction work being done on the flyover at the intersection of Lazatin Avenue and Jose Abad Santos Avenue in San Fernando City, Pampanga will be completed soon.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Why was the Lazatin Flyover dismantled?

The Lazatin Flyover was dismantled in February 2023 for the replacement of the 45 prefabricated segmental slabs or the composite girder with asphalt that had deteriorated from the passage of heavy vehicles.
  • How does the Lazatin Flyover benefit motorists?

Lazatin Flyover helps increase the existing road capacity to relieve traffic congestion at the intersection of Lazatin Avenue and Jose Abad Santos Avenue and allow travel from San Fernando City to Bataan and Zambales, and vice versa.
  • During a recent inspection at the Lazatin Steel Flyover, DPWH Senior Undersecretary Emil Sadain reported to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan that light vehicular traffic with a weight limit of 20 tons may be allowed as soon the tightening of bolts for the newly installed composite steel plate girders laid with asphalt concrete, installation of railings, and clean-up work are all finished.

Sadain, who is in charge of carrying out the DPWH flagship infrastructure projects, said, “DPWH, through the Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) - Bridge Management Cluster, was able to make good progress of the replacement works and we can reopen the flyover ahead of schedule before end of April 2023.”

The Lazatin flyover, a modular steel structure, was initially slated to be completed by the end of May 2023 after being deconstructed in early February 2023 to replace its 45 prefabricated segmental slabs or the composite girder with asphalt that had deteriorated from the passage of heavy vehicles.

DPWH UPMO Project Directors Rodrigo Delos Reyes and Benjamin Bautista, Stakeholders Relations Service Director Randy Del Rosario, and Engineers Samuel Bayot and Alvin Dela Cruz joined Sadain at the project inspection.

The reconstruction of the flyover structure is in accordance with the DPWH's initiative to improve the quality and safety of public roads and bridges.

The DPWH is requesting the local government unit's assistance in restricting the passage of overloaded vehicles with the reopening of the flyover in order to extend the flyover structure's service life and protect motorists and other public road users by preventing accidents.

Lazatin Flyover is a two-lane, 7.5-meter wide, and 195 linear-meter long modular steel flyover with five spans, two abutments, four piers, and 87 linear-meter road approaches.

This project will accommodate traffic to and from the city of San Fernando, potentially cutting down on travel time to neighboring towns and urban centers.

The flyover helps increase the existing road capacity to relieve traffic congestion at the intersection of Lazatin Avenue and Jose Abad Santos Avenue and allow travel from San Fernando City to Bataan and Zambales, and vice versa.
