In a statement, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chief Executive Torsten Muller-Otvos said, “In what has been an unprecedented and unpredictable year, the House of Rolls-Royce has delivered the highest-ever annual sales results in the marque’s 117-year history. In 2021, we delivered 5,586 motor cars to clients around the world, having worked closely with clients to further expand the boundaries of creativity within our Bespoke Collective. This has resulted in some truly remarkable commissions.”

Rolls-Royce continued to create the future of luxury in a year that has witnessed big announcements from the brand, including the introduction of Ghost’s alter-ego, the Black Badge Ghost, and the coming of its first fully-electric model, the Spectre, in 2023.

“Rolls-Royce has once again demonstrated an innate understanding of craftsmanship, honing progressive and proprietary techniques amongst our highly skilled and talented team,” Muller-Otvos added. “Artisans continue to further the realm of bespoke feasibility; precious and rare materials are used with ingenuity to create world-class examples of excellence in their field.”

In 2021, the final Wraith Kryptos Collection cars were delivered to their owners around the world, adding to the web of mystery that began in 2020 with the unveiling of the enigmatic Collection. The Collection conceals hidden cyphers embedded in the car’s design language. To the casual observer, the unique design cues are simply stunning, a collection of pieces that come together to form a dynamic facade. However, for the keen mind of a Rolls-Royce client there is a code that must be cracked, and with it, a one-of-a-kind prize to be won.

Attempts to unravel the mystery have come from all around the world, with extremely intricate hypotheses and tomes of analysis being forwarded to the Home of Rolls-Royce for consideration. To date, sections of the code have been resolved through collaboration between aficionados and clients, but the final resolution is still unknown.

Rolls-Royce and Kengo Kuma also unveiled a one-of-a-kind Bespoke Rolls-Royce Dawn in 2021, bridging the worlds of luxury and architecture. The vehicle made its debut as a moving representation of Kengo Kuma’s new luxury residence “The Kita” in Tokyo, Japan, which was commissioned by global luxury real estate developer Westbank.

The Dawn’s exterior was painted in Silver Haze, a multi-faceted color that references the building’s main structural materials, which are silver-gray. When the light shines on it, it takes on a bronze sheen, giving it a warm glow that reflects the bronze koshi screen louvers on the building’s exterior and the bronze accents on the interior. A sleek silver hood and a clean-cut Black coachline complete the look. The warm, personal feel of natural open-pore Royal Walnut paneling on the rear deck unites the interior and exterior, a homage to the rich Walnut paneling of the towering penthouse entrance lobby.

Ghost Extended has also begun its bespoke journey in 2021, after a highly successful introduction to market. The Ghost Extended Urban Sanctuary offers an upgraded manifestation of parquetry, further exploring its Post Opulent design philosophy, which embraces material substance rather than blatant statement. This geometric mosaic of wood pieces is finished in unlacquered open-pore Obsidian Ayous veneer, evoking the “cracked ice” effect of wooden window shutters on a pavilion building within Shanghai’s famous Yu Yuan Gardens. Bespoke embroidered panels on seat inserts also recall the “cracked ice” theme.

The Navy Blue and Cashmere Grey two-tone colorway on the interior creates a unique experience whether the car is self- or chauffeur-driven. The reclinable Serenity Seating with calf rests that replicate the layout provisioned by private jets adds to the chauffeur-driven experience. This sophisticated treatment is contrasted with Lime Green stitching.

The coachwork of the Urban Sanctuary is finished in a gently muted Gunmetal and Jubilee Silver two-tone with a vivid Lime Green coachline and wheel pinstripe, recalling the neon lights of Shanghai by night.

The Ghost Extended also served as the canvas for the first ever customized Illuminated Fascia as part of a very unique project for American luxury collector David Bartosiak. The Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective agreed to modify the Illuminated Fascia to say “Dream” instead of “Ghost,” according to Bartosiak’s personal request.

    Rolls-Royce Dream Ghost

“This wish speaks of the dream I had as a young boy, born under that beautiful night sky in 1983 in Vero Beach, Florida, the dream I instill in those around me every day, and the dream I hope my spirit carries on to the world when I’m gone,” Bartosiak stated.

The Starlight Headliner has yet another personalized handcrafted touch. The astronomical alignment of the stars over Vero Beach on the day of Bartosiak’s birth in 1983 was portrayed in 1,236 individual fiber optic lights.

Another remarkable Rolls-Royce bespoke commission in 2021 is the unique Bespoke Wraith in Pebble Paradiso blue ordered by a Shanghai-based client. The owner considered the vehicle as her own “Shanghai seaside-inspired paradise.” A hand-painted coachine in a Seashell hue is designed with an exquisite orchid pattern, expressing the client’s desire for elegance.

On the inside, the Piano White monitor lid features an artwork depicting a baby girl’s footprints, a tribute to the client’s long-awaited bundle of joy. The two-tone interior is finished in Charles Blue and Seashell natural grain leather. A personalized constellation honoring her daughter is featured on the bespoke Starlight Headliner.

Coastal hues, a child’s endless love, and the beauty and grace of orchids represent the client’s encompassing way of life – her Wraith is her favorite place to escape to.

A breathtaking, one-of-a-kind Cullinan was also built in 2021 to celebrate the UAE’s historic Golden Jubilee. The exterior was coated in Crystal over Arctic White and had a hand-painted double coachline with Hotspur Red on the upper line and Fame Green on the lower. It also features a Gold Bullion Coachline Motif, the national flag rendered in Hotspur Red, Fame Green. And Black on the C-Pillar Motif, and a double wheel-center pinstripe to reflect the National Flag of the UAE.

When the coach doors are opened, bespoke illuminated treadplates display “50th.” The inside is customized to match the exterior, with Arctic White, Black, and Hotspur Red leather, Fame Green contrast stitch, and the UAE’s emblem embroidered on each headrest. The centerpiece is the gold 50th anniversary motif engraved in the fascia, rear waterfall, and picnic tabletops. The cabin also features a stunning Starlight Headliner with a unique Shooting Star layout in a green tint.

Car enthusiasts and endurance racers Ben and Christine Sloss also commissioned a Bespoke Black Badge Cullinan in 2021.

The Black Badge Cullinan is coated in Pikes Peak Blue, a bespoke colorway that is dedicated to the iconic Colorado hill-climb, which is one of the clients’ favorite events. With brilliant streaks of Forge Yellow on the hand-painted coachline, wheel-center pinstripes, and brake calipers, the vehicle bears the colors of the flag of Modena and the livery featured on the couple’s racing cars. Christine Sloss’ own racing emblem – a stylized stiletto – is stitched on each door panel as another tribute to the couple’s passion for racing.

The Home of Rolls-Royce also collaborated with the House of Hermes in 2021 to produce a Bespoke Phantom for Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa. The motor car, dubbed Phantom Oribe, has a bespoke two-tone exterior finish clearly influenced by the client’s collection of ancient Japanese ceramics, Oribe ware. The Rolls-Royce paint was also used on the client’s private jet, which the Phantom is paired with.

The cabin is mostly upholstered in Hermes Enea Green leather, which extends to the immediate touchpoints. Hermes “Toile H” canvas wraps the door armrests, center and rear consoles, and the signature headliner.

    Rolls-Royce Phantom Oribe

The Phantom Oribe’s Gallery features an artwork derived from a design made by famed French artist and illustrator Pierre Peron, who designed several of Hermes’ classic scarves. The artwork on the Gallery, which is inspired by the iconic Hermes horse theme, is hand-painted on open-pore Royal Walnut and displayed as though exhibited in an art gallery behind glass.

Rolls-Royce Phantom also became the subject of a rare collection released in 2021, the Phantom Tempus Collection. This version of Phantom is based on the concept of time – how it flies and how it can be made seemingly to stay still. Only 20 units of the Phantom Tempus Collection were released by Rolls-Royce.

The Phantom Koa was also unveiled in 2021. It is the first Phantom to feature Koa wood, a rear species of tree that grows only on Hawaiian soil. The idea came from car enthusiast Jack Boyd Smith, Jr. and his wife Laura, who discovered the warmth and character of Koa after spending a lot of time on Maui, Hawaii.

Rolls-Royce also introduced the Landspeed Collection in 2021, which is inspired by George Eyston’s incredible life and record-breaking accomplishments. It was limited to only 25 units of Black Badge Dawn and 35 units of Black Back Wraith. It also has significant aesthetic ties to the strange, otherworldly scenery of the Bonneville Salt Flats, where Thunderbolt made him the fastest man on Earth, although for a brief period of time.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Moscow also unveiled the Black Badge Cullinan “Black and Bright” in 2021, drawing inspiration from the surroundings of Moscow at night. Following the popularity of the Black Badge Wraith “Black and Bright” two years ago, the 2021 model was developed in the same philosophy, but with even more confidence.

Rolls-Royce also began the production of three Boat Tails in 2021. The modern coachbuilding movement has a bright future ahead of it, with Rolls-Royce reaffirming coachbuilding as a permanent part of its future lineup.
