SAIC Motor enjoys record sales in Nov. 2024, makes positive strides in NEV market

MANILA: SAIC Motor has enjoyed record sales in November of 2024 and has made positive strides in the global new-energy vehicle (NEV) market.

Per the state-owned automotive brand, it sold some 479,000 units in the 11th month of the previous year, which marked a month-on-month increase of 19.1 percent and overall represented the fifth consecutive month of positive sales performance for the company.

In the same month, SAIC Motor sold 175,000 NEVs. The recorded figure reflected a year-on-year increase of 16.1 percent.

Volkswagen joint venture

The marque’s strong performance was bolstered by the strong sales of its various brands and models.

For those who do not know, SAIC Motor has an ongoing joint venture agreement with the Volkswagen Group. In November 2024, the two entities decided to extend this partnership until 2040.

Its NEV wholesale sales reached 16,000 units in November and its ID. family, particularly the ID.3, remained a strong performer, with cumulative sales exceeding 200,000 units.

MG performance

SAIC Motor is also the owner of the Morris Garages (MG) brand. According to the former, the new HS compact crossover achieved top safety ratings from both Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) and ANCAP and became one of the best-selling models in the United Kingdom.

Relatedly, the Philippine arm of MG has previewed the HS plug-in hybrid electric vehicle at last year’s Philippine International Motor Show. The said model is touted to make some 321 horsepower and 570 Newton-meters of torque.

As for the new MG3 hybrid electric vehicle, it outperformed its competitors to win the 2024 Thailand Car of the Year award with the MG3 family maintaining strong global sales to achieve monthly turnouts exceeding 10,000 units.

“In Europe, the MG brand achieved cumulative sales of over 220,000 units, demonstrating resilience despite the challenges posed by the European Union's anti-subsidy investigation, maintaining year-on-year growth, and is expected to set a new record for the full year,” SAIC Motor wrote in a press release.

IM Motors

SAIC Motor also owns the IM Motors premium electric vehicle brand. The company owns the major shares with partners Zhangjiang Hi-Tech and the Alibaba Group having minor  stakes.

IM Motors, SAIC Motor pointed out, enjoys a monthly sales of over 10,000 units and continues to achieve both month-on-month and year-on-year growth. 

Intelligent driving tech

SAIC Motor also made strides in intelligent driving technology.

Per the Shanghai-headquartered company, its fleet of 40 L4-level autonomous trucks began commercial operations at Peru's Chancay Port, marking a breakthrough in high-level intelligent driving applications overseas.

Additionally, SAIC Motor was the only company to have both passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles in the first batch of L3-level intelligent connected vehicle pilot programs announced by the Chinese government.

The aforementioned IM Motors introduced an “end-to-end intuitive intelligent driving model,” becoming the first in the industry to offer mass production capabilities for L2, L3, and L4-level autonomous driving technologies.

SAIC Motor’s L4-level Robotaxi, developed by SAIC Motor Z-ONE, currently operates in Shanghai, Suzhou, and Shenzhen, accumulating a total mileage of four million kilometers.

“With these achievements and strategic initiatives, SAIC Motor is poised to continue its leadership in the automotive industry, delivering innovative products and services to consumers both in China and around the world,” the company wrote.
