Subaru debuts all-new Trailseeker for US market

MANILA: Subaru has launched the all-new Trailseeker battery electric vehicle (BEV) for North America. It will go on sale in the United States next year, and it is the brand’s latest electric vehicle (EV) alongside the all-new Uncharted crossover.

    Powertrain

    Propelling the Subaru Trailseeker are two electric motors capable of pushing out 375 horsepower (hp) and 515 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through the Japanese carmaker’s Symmetrical All-wheel-drive (AWD) system. 

    Thanks to the said output figures, the Subaru Trailseeker is said to be capable of accelerating from zero to 100 kilometers per hour (kph) in just 4.4 seconds. This makes it the fastest Subaru model in the US.

    Additionally, the Trailseeker’s 74.7-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery provides the vehicle with an estimated range of 450 kilometers (km) from a single full charge. It likewise uses a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, which is able to bump its battery levels up to 80 percent in just 28 minutes. 

    With the Trailseeker being an off-road capable EV, Subaru provided it with 210 millimeters (mm) of ground clearance, the Subaru X-Mode Dual-Mode traction system with dirt and mud modes, Grip Control, and downhill assist. 

    Moreover, the brand gave the model an upgraded version of the Symmetrical AWD system, which is now touted to be able to vary its torque split for the regenerative braking system and power distribution for improved on and off-road performance. 

    Cold weather is also no issue for the Subaru Trailseeker due to its battery-preconditioning system, which allows for normal charging speeds even in frigid conditions.

    Exterior

    As befitting an off-road-spec EV, the Subaru Trailseeker sports a generous amount of black plastic claddings all around. A particularly chunky piece wraps around its front wheel arches all the way towards its front fascia’s corners. More can be found on its side sills, on its rear wheel arches, and on its rear bumper. 

    Otherwise, the all-new Subaru EV for the US market comes with a wagon-like body shape that is equipped with LED lighting fixtures, a roof-mounted rear spoiler, roof rails, and a set of 18 or 20-inch wheels. 

    To note, the Subaru EV’s roof rails are capable of carrying up to 317 kilograms (kg) of static loads. It also has a towing capacity of 1,587 kg (3,500 pounds). 

    Interior, safety

    Inside the Subaru Trailseeker is a five-seater layout enhanced by blue-trimmed leather upholstery, a large center console, metallic finishes, and a logically arranged array of control surfaces.

    The aforementioned leather on its seats and many other interior surfaces is made of water-resistant StarTex. It also comes with a 14-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as dual wireless smartphone charging pads. 

    For now, the American arm of the Japanese car brand has yet to share an extensive list of its interior amenities, but cockpit photos of the car suggests that it has the following: 

    • Dual-zone automatic air conditioning
    • Digital gauge cluster
    • Electronic parking brake
    • Push-to-start button
    • Power tailgate
    • Drive mode selector

    Concerning safety, the Subaru Trailseeker for the US market comes standard with the EyeSight Driver Assist Technology suite. The aforementioned includes driver distraction mitigation, pre-collision braking, front cross traffic assist, advanced adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, lane change assist, traffic jam assist, and blind-spot monitoring - among others. 

    Availability

    As mentioned above, sales of the all-new Subaru Trailseeker will start in the US early next year.

    In the context of the local market, Subaru Philippines has yet to announce if it is bringing in an EV model, but something like the Trailseeker could be an attractive option for Filipinos who would like to enjoy the outdoors using a more sustainable form of mobility.
