Toyota launches all-new Crown Sedan, to be sold in Japan next week

MANILA: Toyota Motor Corporation revealed the all-new Crown Sedan in Japan on Thursday.

Last year, the Japanese carmaker ushered in a new era for the Crown by  introducing crossover models that carry on the nameplate’s innovative and cutting-edge heritage and cater to the diverse lifestyles of its customers.

Since the development traces back the history of the nameplate, Toyota decided to add a sedan in the lineup as the original Crown had been a sedan. The new model reinterprets the classic style of Crown sedan, making it suitable for both personal and business use.

The front face, composed of a large Under Priority trapezoid grille with a vertical pattern and a hammerhead design, represents the Crown’s status as Toyota’s flagship vehicle. The vehicle’s width is emphasized by the tail lights, which run a straight line from side to side.

Customers can choose among six exterior color options: White, Silver, Black, Metal, Gray, and Bronze.

On the inside, the Crown Sedan features an island architecture dashboard, which groups together various functions, such as displays and gearshift, to create separate islands.

The illumination is arranged based on the Japanese concept of omotenashi or hospitality. LEDs with 64-tone color switching are placed at the both ends of the instrument panel, in the leg space of the front seats, and on the sides of the rear door trims.

There are two color themes available for the interior: Black and Mid-brown.

Designed to be a chauffeured car, the Crown Sedan has a three-meter wheelbase to achieve spacious rear seats with ample legroom. The suspension settings and control over damping force help reduce vibrations from uneven roads.

To support diverse needs and Toyota’s carbon neutrality goals, the Crown Sedan gets a fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) variant. It is equipped with the same high-performance fuel-cell system as the Mirai. With three high-pressure hydrogen tanks and fuel cells, the vehicle can reach up to 820 kilometers per three-minute hydrogen refill.

The Crown Sedan is also available in a hybrid variant, which comes with a multi-stage hybrid system composed of a 2.5-liter engine and two electric motors. This system can achieve maximum engine output from around 43 kilometers per hour.

Toyota announced that the all-new Crown Sedan will be rolled out in dealerships in Japan on November 13 with the price of ¥8.3 million (approximately P3 million) for the FCEV variant and ¥7.3 million (approximately P2.7 million) for the hybrid variant. The company targets to sell 600 units per month.

The new model will also be available through Kinto subscription services in Japan starting November 9.
