Toyota to make human model software free in aid of vehicle safety

MANILA: Last June 16, Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) revealed that its Total Human Model for Safety (THUMS) software would be made available for free beginning January 2021 to promote a safe mobility society.

THUMS, which had its debut in 2000, is regarded as the first digital human body model software program for analyzing bodily injuries due to vehicle collisions. Through  free access to THUMS, it is anticipated to improve vehicle safety for more people.

Furthermore, more than 100 vehicle producers, research institutions, universities, and suppliers have been currently using THUMS for vehicle safety research and development worldwide. These safety technologies include airbags, seatbelts, and other vehicle accessories that aid in the reduction of injury risks as a result of vehicle collisions with pedestrians.

Moreover, the free use of the THUMS software can aid in lessening traffic fatalities and injuries, which, in turn, leads to safe mobility with automated vehicles and other technologies involved.

THUMS, developed in association with Toyota Central R&D Labs, Inc., presented its latest Version 6 in 2019. It was also available for free along with Versions 4 and 5.

Since then, THUMS has continuously evolved to contribute a selection of models with various physiques, ages, and genders that include the detailed anatomy of the human body (muscles, internal organs, brains, and skeletal structures).

THUMS can evaluate collision-related injuries in greater detail compared to physical crash dummies frequently used in vehicle collision tests. This is because it accurately models the durability and contours of human bodies.

Performing simulations on computers also allows the recurring assessment of various collision patterns while significantly lessening development costs and lead times linked with collision testing.

To date, vehicle safety analysis organizations are also considering the utilization of THUMS for digital testing in their future evaluation plans.
