How Coco Martin uses his own Toyota Tamaraw

Famous actor, producer, screenwriter, and director Rodel Pacheco Nacianceno — more famously known as Coco Martin — is the endorser and the face of Toyota Motor Philippines’ next-generation Tamaraw. He has been doing it for quite a while now, and has appeared in most of the company’s efforts to promote the nameplate. 

Coco Martin, however, doesn’t just promote the said vehicle; instead, he has fully embraced the Tamaraw lifestyle and has been using his utility van (UV) variant for ranging day-to-day chores, business ventures, and even as a reliable partner when filming episodes of FPJ’s Batang Quiapo.

The aforementioned was shared by Coco Martin during a press conference at the Next Generation Toyota Tamaraw Roadshow’s third leg held at Toyota Marilao, Bulacan. 

In his own words, the actor even modified his very own Toyota Tamaraw UV. 

“Yung Toyota Tamaraw UV ko, one year na sya sa akin. Pina pogi ko rin sya, nilagyan ko ng mags. Ako honestly, gusto lahat ng bagay sa buhay ko inaayos ko talaga. Hindi siya pwedeng ok na yan,” (My Toyota Tamaraw UV has been with me for one year already. I made it look more attractive by installing mags. Honestly, I want to improve everything I own, and having it look just “ok” doesn’t cut it with me.) Martin said. 

“Ginagamit namin sya sa pag nenegosyo namin ni Jules. Sya yung, pag namamalengke kami, or yung mga tao sa bahay namin kailangan umalis pa punta ng Batangas, yung ang gamit namin,” (I use it for my business together with Jules. It is the vehicle we use to go to the market, or when folks at home want to go to Batangas.) Martin added. 

So, why the Toyota Tamaraw? As a professional working in creature ventures, Coco Martin further shared that upon seeing the Tamaraw for the first time, he saw the purpose and potential of the said vehicle in his life. 

He was amazed by how versatile the vehicle is and the fact that it is produced locally here in the Philippines. 

“Genius talaga nakaisip nito [Toyota Tamaraw>. Yung inisip mo lahat ng pangangailangan ng Pinoy, yung all-purpose, at nilagay mo sa isang sasakyan, naka-genius niya,” (Whoever thought of the Toyota Tamaraw is a genius. The idea of addressing all of the needs of Pinoys via a singular all-purpose vehicle, that’s genius) Martin said. 

Additionally, Coco Martin shared that he drives his Toyota Tamaraw in the regular. But unlike the usual manual transmission cars he was used to, the UV feels smooth and soft. He likewise commended the Tamaraw’s excellent power delivery without compromising fuel efficiency.

Toyota Tamaraw UV in PH

In the Philippine market, the Toyota Tamaraw UV has several versions, including the gasoline manual transmission (MT) trim, the all-new GL diesel automatic transmission version, and the diesel MT version.

Pricing for the Toyota Tamaraw UV, per TMP’s website, is as follows: 

Toyota Tamaraw UV variant	Price
Tamaraw DSL MT	P1.142 million
Tamaraw DSL GL AT	P1.167 million
Tamaraw Gas MT	P1.025 million

As hinted by its locally available variants, the Toyota Tamaraw UV has two engine options. The Gas MT trim uses the 2.0-liter 1TR-FE, which is capable of producing up to 137 horsepower (hp) and 183 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. The said engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission. 

The Toyota Tamaraw DSL MT and DSL GL AT, meanwhile, come with a 2.4-liter turbodiesel engine capable of making up to 148 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The one with the manual uses a five-speed gearbox, while the automatic version uses a six-speed gearbox. 

All versions of the next-generation Toyota Tamaraw are built on the Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform, which is also used by current versions of the Fortuner, Innova, and Hilux.

On that note, it has a ladder frame chassis, equipped with a double wishbone front suspension and leaf springs for the rear. Thanks to the aforementioned, the Tamaraw has the rigidity to handle harsh terrain and heavy loads of up to 910 kilograms (kg) for the UV trims, 1,110 kg for the Long Wheelbase (LWB) Dropside, and 1,025 kg for the GL Dropside. 

Stopping power of the Toyota Tamaraw is provided by a front disc brake and rear drums. It also comes standard with a hand-operated manual parking brake. 

With regard to exterior features, the Toyota Tamaraw DSL GL AT was kitted out with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting fixtures, power-adjustable side mirrors, as well as a black-colored radiator grille and lower front bumper.

At maximum, the Toyota Tamaraw UV can accommodate up to 14 occupants (including the two in the front cabin). 

The all-new GL UV trim also has a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, manual-adjust front seats, and manual air-conditioning - among others.
