The next-generation Toyota Tamaraw was introduced for the Philippine market in December 2024, and it burst into the scene as a potent mobility solution for business owners, small to medium companies, and maybe even as a platform for creativity for people who know their way around car mods. 

Fast forward to 2025, and we are steadily seeing examples of the Toyota-made ride on local roads. So, without a doubt, it is growing in popularity. 

But for would-be buyers, does the Toyota Tamaraw have any particular weakness they should be aware of? Also, what are the key strengths of this model? Let’s find out here. 

Tough, powerful platform

The Toyota Tamaraw was built on a sturdy ladder-frame chassis based on the Japanese brand’s Innovative International multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform. The aforementioned is equipped with an IFS coil front suspension and a rigid leaf spring rear end - ensuring durability and a carry capacity of one ton. 

To enable the model to haul heavy loads, it was provided with a 2.4-liter 2GD-FTV turbodiesel inline-4 engine capable of producing up to 148 horsepower (hp) and 400 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. Power is sent to its rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual. 

If its maximum output figures sound familiar, it's because the Tamaraw uses the same engine as the tried and true Toyota Hilux J lineup of trims. The said powertrain also makes it one of the peppier light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in the country right now. 

Brusque but stylish

While other LCV models in the Philippine market sport simple and straightforward exterior designs, the Toyota Tamaraw breaks the stereotype and is actually easy on the eyes, thanks to its macho but modern exterior styling. 

For starters, the front cab section of the ride comes with a boxy design, which helps it blend into whatever configuration it comes with, whether as a dropside pickup truck, a utility van, or an aluminum cargo van. 

From the front, the model gets a hefty and angular look thanks to its black-colored front bumper. The aforementioned are complemented by a black-colored trim piece, which holds its grille and its headlamp clusters. Completing the rugged appearance of the model are a set of 16-inch alloy wheels or 14-inch steelies. 

Far from basic

Inside the Toyota Tamaraw is a well-arranged cabin that’s far from basic. For reference, the top-spec GL Dropside version comes standard with the following amenities:

• Seven-inch infotainment system 
• Apple CarPlay and Android Auto 
• Keyless entry

Moreover, the top-of-the-line trim of the Tamaraw also has dual front airbags, anti-lock braking, and electronic brake-force distribution. 

Cons

Usual truck ride quality

While its suspension components make it a tough and capable hauler, the Tamaraw’s leaf spring rear suspension system isn’t the best when it comes to ride comfort. It isn’t a weakness per se, but this characteristic is something to watch out for, especially for those buying the Toyota model not as a logistics tool, but as something to modify or play with.

To sum it all up, the Toyota Tamaraw provides good value for the money. For its asking price ranging from P767,000-P1.54 million, it has plenty of power and grit, plus, it isn’t too basic when it comes to amenities. 

Regardless, people who are interested in the Toyota Tamaraw should test drive it first. Checking the internet for car specs is a good start, sure. But having some seat time with the vehicle you want to purchase is still a crucial part of acquiring a new ride.
