Next-gen Toyota Hilux gets 5-star safety rating from ANCAP

MANILA: The next-generation Toyota Hilux has received a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) — weeks after the utility vehicle had its debut in the Land Down Under.

Based on the assessment, the aforementioned score was due to its performance in testing across all four assessment pillars namely Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), Vulnerable Road User Protection (VRUP), and Safety Assist (SA).

Per ANCAP, the five-star rating is applicable to 16 out of the 17 variants available in their market (excluded is the Rugged X).

Here is the next-generation Toyota Hilux’s score under the said categories.

ANCAP attributed the “Good” performance to its broadened suite of standard safety features. 

Among these are:

• Dual frontal, side chest-protecting, side head-protecting, and center airbags as well as knee airbag for the driver
• Autonomous emergency braking (Car-to-Car, Vulnerable Road User, Junction and Crossing, Backover and Head-On)
• Lane support system with lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and emergency lane keeping
• Advanced speed assistance system with speed sign recognition

Further, the next-generation Toyota Hilux that underwent the test received an eight-point penalty “for the risk posed by their front structure to occupants of oncoming vehicles.”

The tested trim was the dual cab 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel-fed engine with 48-volt motor in mild-hybrid setup and four-wheel-drive powertrain configuration.

Per Toyota Australia, the said mill can dish out 201 horsepower and 420-500 Newton-meters of torque — depending on the variation.

Inside the higher-spec trims of the Australian next-gen Toyota Hilux is a 12.3-inch infotainment display comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and a similarly-sized digital gauge cluster.

To note, the pickup truck was introduced in the Australian market a month after its initial global debut in Thailand. 

At the time of publishing, Toyota Motor Philippines confirmed its arrival in the country next year — though the specifications, pricing, and trims are yet to be shared.
