Volvo sales up by 5.6% in 2021

MANILA: Volvo Cars moved a total of 698,693 units in 2021, reflecting a 5.6% increase versus the previous year.

 

The global sales growth showed resilience in the face of continuing supply restrictions, as well as the sustained popularity of Volvo’s Recharge lineup of vehicles with fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain. In 2021, sales of Recharge models increased by 63.9% versus 2020. Recharge models accounted for 27% of the company’s total sales volume in 2021.

Meanwhile, the number of Volvo cars sold online climbed by 216%. Increased customer demand, along with an expanded offer in more regions, drove this sales increase.

In December, the company made 64,436 retail deliveries, a decline of 18.1% versus the same month in 2020. This was caused by ongoing component supply shortages, which hampered production and customer deliveries.

Recharge models accounted for nearly 40% of all new Volvo cars sold in December, with fully electric cars accounting for 7.4%. In Europe, Recharge models accounted for about 60% of total sales, while in US, they accounted for nearly 30% of total sales.

Volvo sold 122,173 units in US last year, a rise of 10.9% versus 2020. In December alone, Volvo moved 10,793 units in US.

In China, the company sold 171,676 units, up 3% versus the previous year. 14,642 brand-new Volvo cars were sold in China in December.

Year-to-date sales in Europe grew by 1.8% to 293,471 units, owing to high demand for the Recharge models. Volvo has oved 28,561 units across Europe in December.

The XC60 remained to be Volvo’s best-selling model globally in 2021, moving a total of 215,635 units. It was followed by the XC40 with 201,037 units. The third best-selling model is the XC90, with 108,231 units sold.
