Take a look at some rain-ready 2-wheelers from Yamaha Motor PH

The rainy season is upon us, and with it comes a handful of challenges, especially for riders.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Which models from Yamaha Motor Philippines are included in the list?

The list includes the Yamaha PG-1, Mio Gear, and NMax Tech Max.
  • How can the motorcycles in the list help riders in the rain?

The said motorbikes include features like block-patterned tires, a slip-resistant stepboard, and dual-channel ABS.
  • And while almost all two-wheelers can handle some shower and a little flood water, these nameplates from Yamaha Motor Philippines (YMPH) are built to master the watery weather.

    Yamaha PG-1

Released sometime in May last year, the Yamaha PG-1 gives the local subsidiary of the Japanese motorcycle brand a contender in the country’s dual-sport segment.

Competing against the likes of the Suzuki Raider J Crossover and the new Honda XRM 125 Motard, the Yamaha PG-1 is equipped with components that can handle the elements — in style.

    Fit, finish

At the fore, the moped is fitted with retro-cool appointments such as a circular headlamp, two protruding oval signal lights, an H-shaped front fork fitted with rubber boot covers, and a classic-styled fender.

The Yamaha PG-1 has a naked handlebar, a pair of oval side mirrors, and a small instrument cluster.

It has an exposed underchassis, so the engine and other parts of the motorcycle are left out in the open. However, there are fairings on its gas tank, as well as the sides that cover the bike’s underseat compartment.

On its rear is a retro-style grab bar, a rounded taillamp with turn signals, as well as a fender with an integrated reflector. Two standard-issue shock absorbers can also be found at the back alongside a simple, yet stylish exhaust with a plastic protective cover that shares the same style as other claddings slapped on the motorcycle.

    Other useful features

Here are some of the notable appointments that will help riders stay safe this rainy season:

    190-millimeter ground clearance

It can give the rider some confidence when forced to pass through lightly flooded areas

    5.1-liter tank capacity

Ensures one has enough fuel; secured with a cap and is placed under the seat to prevent water from getting in

    Block-patterned tires

These provide good traction and boasts adaptability to a wide range of surfaces; slapped on 16-inch spoked wheels

    Powertrain, brakes

The Yamaha PG-1 is powered by a 114-cubic-centimeter (cc) engine mated to a four-speed semi-automatic transmission.

    Here are its power figures:

Maximum power output (in horsepower [hp>)

    8.8

    Maximum torque (in Newton-meters [Nm>)

    9.5

For decelerating, the moped uses a single hydraulic disc brake at the front and a mechanical leading drum brake at the back.

    Variants, pricing

The Yamaha PG-1 is offered in a single variant with a price tag of P82,900.

    Yamaha Mio Gear

Touted as a tough scooter, the Yamaha Mio Gear has the right attitude and appointments to get one through the rainy days.

On that note, YMPH has partnered with Spartan Philippines back in 2023 for its “Play Your Tough” campaign

    Fit, finish

The front end of the Yamaha Mio Gear looks modern and stylish with an LED headlamp, which is brighter and more durable. This is clustered together with hazard lamps, which can alert other motorists in certain situations. The inclusion of hazard lights means that owners will no longer have to bring their bikes to “talyer” mechanics to tinker with their illumination system.

Covered in curvaceous cowling is an intuitive-looking instrument cluster alongside standard-issue handlebars. It gets angular-looking side mirrors, which fit the character of the small-displacement scooter.

Its sides are protected with fairings that envelope the motorbike, unlike the aforementioned Yamaha PG-1. They not only guard the electronics but also serve some aerodynamic purpose. The seats are chunky and are good for both long and short rides.

At the back is a modern-looking grab bar and taillights akin to the brand’s other small scoots. It gets a rear monoshock, a tailpipe with a plastic guard, and a fender, which also holds the two-wheeler’s number plate.

    Other useful features

YMPH’s city scooter has been equipped with features that will help motorcycle riders this wet season. They are listed on the table below:

    Slip-resistant wide footboard

It helps save the rider from slipping when stepping on the footboard as their shoes easily get wet from the rain

    Rider side back step

Pillion riders can stay safe and secure using the easy-access footrest; these have a ribbed design for added foot grip

    Double hooks

Can be used to secure luggage to ensure stability when riding in the rain

    Powertrain, brakes

Powering the Yamaha Mio Gear is a 125 cc engine mated to a continuously variable transmission. The powerplant uses the marque’s “Blue Core” technology, which promises more power while consuming less fuel.

Here’s how much power it makes:

    Maximum power output (in hp)

    9.2

    Maximum torque (in Nm)

    9.6

When braking, the Yamaha Mio Gear uses a hydraulic disc brake at the front and a mechanical leading drum brake at the rear.

    Variants, pricing

Like the Yamaha PG-1, the Mio Gear is only offered in a sole variant with a price tag of P79,400.

    Yamaha NMax Tech Max

Another one of YMPH’s newest offerings is the Yamaha NMax Tech Max.

The maxi-scooter not only wows with a large canvas but also impresses with a new technology that could prove helpful to riders braving wet conditions.

    Fit, finish

At the front end of the motorcycle is a full LED headlamp with dual projectors. Per usual, the large windshield helps provide some protection from the elements and makes the two-wheeler more aerodynamic.

It has a short fender covering the front telescopic fork and its relatively chunky wheels.

The motorcycle’s side profile looks tough and beefy with plenty of hard plastics. Riders can move around comfortably thanks to wide footrests.

The backside of the Yamaha NMax Tech Max boasts a new taillight layout that not only offers a more modern look but also enhances visibility. Found here, too, is a unit swing rear suspension system with sub-tank technology and a sporty-looking fender housing the fat tires.

    Other useful features

Like the aforementioned models, the Yamaha NMax Tech Max also has features that will prove to be useful when riding in the rain.

    Digital instrument cluster

This will be easy to read and understand even when riding in dim conditions, such as in cloudy environment

    3-level downshift control

Lets riders fine-tune acceleration and deceleration for enhanced responsiveness and control

    Dual-channel anti-lock braking

    This ensures optimal braking performance

    Large underseat storage

With 25-liters of storage space, riders can keep items dry when braving the rain

    Fat tires

Tires measure 110/70 at the front and 130/70 at the rear; they provide more stability

    Powertrain, brakes

Propulsion for the Yamaha NMax Tech Max comes from a four-stroke, Die-casting Aluminum-Silicon (DIASIL) cylinder, single overhead cam, 155 cc mill. It is mated to the Yamaha Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission (YECVT).

The said setup makes the following numbers:

    Maximum power output (in hp)

    15

    Maximum torque (in Nm)

    14.2

Stopping power comes from disc brakes, front and back.

Zigwheels Philippines Managing Editor Ruben Manahan IV has taken the motorbike on a long ride spanning more than 200 kilometers from Cabanatuan to Baguio City.

    Variants, pricing

The Yamaha NMax Tech Max is sold in a single trim priced at P175,900.
