BMW reveals its 3D printed S1000RR Frame
MANILA: The BMW Group Digital Day 2018 has been in the news for all the right reasons. The Event is organized by the Automobile Giant, BMW to showcase all the cool and innovative technologies that they will be working on in this year. Most of the revelations at this event were around the company’s automotive business, but the one thing that caught our interest and will definitely intrigue you as well is the new 3D Printed frame for the BMW S1000RR Superbike.
All motorcycle fans are amazed to look at the carbon-fiber swingarm that has been created using a prototyping technology called Selective Laser Melting and contains the in-line four engine of the S1000RR.
Experts are speculating things from the pictures that have been released. The surface appears to be rough, but nothing can be confirmed till BMW releases structural properties of the 3D Printed arm.
This is not the first step that shows the interest of BMW in the process of additive manufacturing. This is reflected in the inauguration of The Additive Manufacturing Centre in Munich, that is capable of printing 1,40,000 parts annually. While 3D Printing is a brand new concept when it comes to motorbikes, it has been employed in prototyping on a large scale. Moreover, it has also been used in manufacturing parts of BMW’s cars such as the BMW i8 Roadster in the past.
BMW is not the first motorbike manufacturing giant to delve into the world of additive manufacturing. We have seen the Divergent 3D Dagger unveil a parallel chassis. The next model of the S1000RR is awaited towards the end of this year, but experts are sceptical that it will contain the 3D Printed Arm because of the premature stage of this technology in the motorcycle domain. However, we cannot deny the fact that with the ushering in of 3D-Printing technology, future prospects are infinite.
