MMDA: Motorcycles caused the most road deaths in 2019
MANILA: A report from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) shows that 234 motorcycles were involved in crashes that caused the most number fatalities in 2019 – 154 of whom were drivers, 36 were passengers, and 22 were pedestrians.
This is due in part to the increase in both fatal and non-fatal incidents of motorcycle crashes in 2019 at 31,279 compared to only 26,652 in 2018. That’s a stark 17.3% increase in total accidents within 12 months.
Quezon City has the most number of fatal motorcycle crashes with 69, followed by Parañaque with 19, Valenzuela with 17, Caloocan 16, and Manila with 15.
In total, 9,655 drivers, 2,546 passengers, and 2,140 pedestrians were injured in motorcycle-related crashes.
As to other vehicles involved accidents that caused fatalities, there were 98 trucks, 80 cars, and 40 public utility jeepneys.
