Audi introduced its supermini A1 hatchback in 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show. That time the German automaker introduced just the three door version and then a year later a five-door version joined its elder brother. The five-door version is called the A1 Sportback and both in styling and appeal is similar to the three-door A1. With A1 Sportback, you get a contracting roof, rear spoiler, and a distinguished design language. Inside too you get a comforting and soothing feel, making your long journey as pleasurable as possible. On the entertainment front, the car is blessed with a number of amenities like AM/FM/CD/MP3/Aux/USB with Multi Info Display that further enhance its comfort level. Under the hood, the A1 Sportback is restricted to two engine options, first is the 1.2L TFSI and another one is the 1.4 L TFSI mill, both mated with a 7 SP AUTO DIRECT SHIFT transmission system.

Interior & Features

We have seen that both the three door and five door A1 are similar from the outside and likewise they share their interior amenities. Though, it is the cheapest Audi available in town but the company has not compromised with its interior quality and reliability. Inside you'll find firm and comfortable seats with many adjustments. The center console houses an infotainment unit and other controls, giving you full access to A1. The windows aren't deep enough but still provide you a great outside view. Coming to the seating area, the rear seat is not wide enough and is only best for two average size adults. The head space is decent, making it difficult for tall individuals to seat comfortability. The boot space is limited to 270 liters.

Dimension wise A1 Sportback offers the same body length like the 1.4L 3 door version. To be specific, the car is 3954 mm long, 1746 mm wide and 1422 mm tall. Moving on to its wheelbase and ground clearance the 5 door A1 has a decent figure in both these disciples measuring 2469 mm and 121 mm respectively. The car is also easy to maneuver with its 10.6 mm turning circle. So, now you don't have to be afraid of the steep roads and heavy traffic scenario.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

Audi A1 Sportback is powered with a 1.4L TFSI 4-CYL 16-V engine that produces a maximum power of 120 hp @ 5000 rpm with the peak torque of 200 Nm @ 1500 rpm. The said engine is able to perform so well with the help of its seven-speed AUTO DIRECT SHIFT gear box. Like the three-doors trim version, this one too is a front-wheel driven car. As for acceleration, the Sportback can run down from null to 100km in a mere time of 9.0 seconds. Audi A1 Sportback is for the people who like speed, as the same runs on the top speed of 203 km/h. Talking about economy, A1 Sportback showcases a combined fuel economy of 5.3 L per 100 km. Its fuel tank capacity is same as its elder sibling i.e. 45L with which the car can run 849 km. Talking about its CO2 contribution, it has a combined emission reading of 122.0 g/km.

Braking & Safety

As for the record, Audi A1 three-door version recently got a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP and we are expecting the five-door version to get the same rating in the near future. The Sportback is bestowed with a number of safety features like drivers and passenger airbag, curtain and side air bag, and as for the knee airbag, you can't find one here. Stability is not an issue here, the car comes armed with ABS with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution. Immobilizer and security alarm are two additional features making the A1 Sportback a secure vehicle.

It's never a bad idea to own an Audi, and being the most affordable one you can have the chance to get one for yourself. Also, for a country like the Philippines where traffic is such an issue this compact hatch is a perfect pick.
