Kia EV5

The Kia EV5’s cabin excels in terms of practicality. Inside, you have lots of headroom and leg room both in the first and second rows. That said, this SUV can effectively accommodate five adult passengers. At the back, it comes with a wide 1,714-L (max) cargo space for your family’s groceries and baggage. And, on top of this, it also offers a decently-sized 67-L frunk underneath its hood.

The higher-spec GLS features both leather and fabric seats, while the base GL comes with fabric seats only. Regardless of the material, the EV5’s seats offer great cushioning and support for all passengers. Exclusive to the driver is a high-tech cockpit that comes with a 12.3-inch TFT LCD instrument display, a 4-spoke multi-control steering wheel wrapped in synthetic leather, which is equipped with an audio remote control feature, and a dashboard with a combination of physical and touch controls.

Aside from these, its 12.3-inch TFT LCD infotainment display is connected to the driver’s instrument panel. Its infotainment is equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth, and is linked to a 6-speaker sound system. For enhanced passenger convenience and functionality, the EV5 also comes with four USB ports (front: 2, second row: 2) and a wireless charger. The higher trim also gets a panoramic sunroof for a more premium interior feel.

In terms of dimensions, both variants of the Kia EV5 measure 4,615 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width, and 1,715 mm in height. This SUV also comes with a 2,750-mm wheelbase. The base trim offers a 175-mm ground clearance, while the higher-spec offers 161 mm.

The Kia EV5 features a smart, hypermodern architecture, which emphasizes its electrified character on the road. Upfront, its “Digital Tiger Face” design is flanked by a futuristic-looking LED headlamp assembly, which Kia refers to as “Star Map LED lighting.” This SUV also comes with LED DRLs and a dynamic-looking bumper with a chrome panel, which has pointed edges on each side.

Moreover, it flaunts a classy multi-toned silhouette, accentuated by chrome accents, monotone finishes, and its 18-inch alloy wheels, which resemble a star or a shuriken. Additionally, its flush door handles further enhance its hypermodern aura wherever it goes. On top, it also comes with a roof rack for more storage.

Meanwhile, at the back, it sports curved LED combination lamps with a high-mounted stop lamp for enhanced visibility, especially at night. A rear spoiler also adds a sporty touch to this EV’s overall appearance. And, for a more exclusive look, the higher-spec GLS also gets a power tailgate (height adjustable).

In terms of suspension, the Kia EV5 is equipped with a MacPherson Strut with a Single Lower Arm at the front and a Multi-Link at the rear. This setup is credited for this SUV’s agile maneuverability and driver-friendly handling. It also offers great absorption of bumps and uneven concrete pavements. Ultimately, this EV can deliver a supple and very refined riding experience for all occupants.

Both variants of the Kia EV5 run on a single electric motor, which generates 217 PS and 310 Nm of torque, but they are paired with different battery packs depending on the variant. First, the higher-spec GLS’ motor is powered by an 88.1-kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate battery pack that delivers a 550-km WLTP driving range. 

On the other hand, the base GL variant’s motor is powered by the 64.2-kWh version of the same battery, which offers a 400-km WLTP driving range. Using a DC fast charger, both battery packs can be replenished from 10% to 80% in just 49 minutes.

With all of these in mind, this SUV is peppy and smooth off the line. Its electric powertrain offers a linear power delivery on the highway, allowing you to effectively perform overtakes. Admittedly, its range is a bit limited for long-distance trips out of town. And, when driven spiritedly, this EV’s range can go down immediately. But, to be fair, the EV5 is a family-friendly car that is designed to be driven sensibly inside and outside the city.

In terms of safety, both variants of the Kia EV5 are equipped with lane following assist, lane keeping assist, forward collision-avoidance assist, smart cruise control with a stop and go feature, and a parking distance warning. However, only the higher-spec GLS also comes with parking collision-avoidance assist (reverse only), a blind spot monitor, and a 360-degree surround view monitor.

This EV comes with front and rear disc brakes. Its braking setup is also supported by an anti-lock braking system, electronic stability control, downhill brake control, hill-start assist control, and a multi-collision brake.

The Kia EV5 hits a sweet spot for discerning buyers who are looking for an EV SUV that is both practical and reliable for everyday city use and, at the same time, enjoyable and non-intimidating to drive on the highway.
