MG 6, the fastback sedan is among the latest offerings from MG Philippines and has been displayed at the 2019 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS). The new version of this car has come with a caption ‘Fast is Back’ and the carmaker has provided it with updated mechanicals along with alluring looks.
The car has arrived in two variants namely AT Alpha and AT Trophy and it is expected to compete shoulder-to-shoulder with other big nameplates.
MG 6 falls under the compact SUV segment and is particularly a compact four-door four-wheeler. One would easily consider the car as a sedan at first glimpse and buyers will be delighted by its elegant interior along with a load of responsive features. A gentle and single slope design from the roof to the rear of the vehicle explicitly demonstrates that it is a fastback. The coaster carries a sportier outfit. With a fair aggressiveness and sleek outlook, the car looks a bit more premium than one can expect in this segment.
The sumptuous nature is also carried forward to the interior. There is a mix of red and black that creates a winsome contrast to the eyes. An 8-inch touchscreen display sits on the middle of the dash, followed by the gear level. The latter have accents of red and black, which is basically a continuation of the two-tone interior. To the left, it features power steering wheel, which houses a plethora of buttons for infotainment controls.
It schleps a contemporary exterior, which is the British marque’s bid to win over the millennials. There is less doubt that the vehicle is sportier than it’s previous generation models. A clear fastback outline and aesthetics of luxury are perceptible upgrades to garner more attention in the local market. As per the outfits, one can witness a honeycomb metal grille flanked by LED headlights at the front. The latter dwells into the quarter panel. Chrome bezels can be found at the window’s outline and it also marks the end of the front fiasco.
What is expected to enhance the sportier character of MG 6 is the presence of a number of strikes on the bonnet and on the side profiles. This is further supplemented by another chrome lining that runs along the bottom of the front and rear door. The rear end is substantially more praiseworthy than the front in terms of cosmetics. At first, there are the LED taillights that draw illumination from two parallel running strips, followed by another chrome skidding on the bootlid. Its bottom end is highlighted via a matte finished bumper that also integrates the dual exhaust outlets.
When it comes to offering comfort, MG 6 has MacPherson unit with coil spring type suspension ruling the front and multi-link for the rear. Undoubtedly, the combination performs well enough to make anyone reluctant in point fingers to the vehicle’s suspension. Thereafter, the car coasts smoothly even at high speeds and runs on the 18-inch alloy wheels.
Under the hood, MG 6 gets a 1,498cc 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Both the mill and transmission is standard across both the variants. The engine churns out a maximum power of 162 hp at 5,600 rpm and a peak torque of 250 Nm at 4,300 rpm. The figures may look a bit on the average side, owing to the fact that the vehicle is a luxury sports car.
Both variants get disc brakes for both the front and rear wheels. No wonder, this offers an exceptional braking power to the car. The brakes are further supplemented by Anti-locking Braking System, which plays a crucial role in managing brakes at higher speeds.
Safety features include central locking, keyless entry, parking sensors, stability control, traction control and airbags for both drivers and passengers.
MG 6 is a stylish sports luxury that maintains a subtle balance in terms of the exterior’s design and interior’s elegant aspect. Along with great comfort, it brings the best safety equipment and excellent stopping power.
However, on the engine front, the expectations must not remain high, but the mill manages to deliver a decent power output and a fair amount of torque so that it doesn’t break the sportier flow from the outfit to its heart.
MG 6 is branding this car as a compact four-door fastback. The branding has gone very well with the car. The low riding position, the comfortable driver’s seat, and the ergonomic controls, all add up to a very pleasurable driving experience. It comes with a full set of driver controls. The engine is a 1.5-liter turbocharged unit which is responsive
