Wave110 Alpha Pros & Cons

Things We Like in Wave110 Alpha

Launched as a product which has more focus on utility over outright design, the Honda Wave 110 Alpha is a nice and practical option for all those who are tight on their budget. At PHP 47,700, the Honda Wave 110 Alpha is very economical to purchase, making it one of the cheapest two-wheelers on sale in the country right now

The Honda Wave 110 Alpha has been fitted with a four-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled, 109.1cc engine. The specifications do sound very basic by today’s standards, but the durability and fuel efficiency of this engine is not at all questionable

The robust underpinnings of Honda Wave 110 Alpha make it quite durable to run over all kinds of surfaces. At the same time, the softer suspension setup has made the overall riding experience quite easy and comfortable.

Things We Dont Like in Wave110 Alpha

To keep the costs in check, Honda has made the Wave 110 Alpha look and feel a tad too basic, which is evident by the way it has been equipped. Apart from the alloy wheels, that too in the optional variant, the Honda Wave 110 Alpha is very under-equipped and lacks any other noteworthy feature

The overall design of the Honda Wave 110 Alpha is very basic, and somewhat, looks like as if it belongs to the bygone decade. It doesn’t look fresh and contemporary at all, which makes it not a preferred choice among the buyers of the current generation

Overview

Honda Wave 110 Alpha is one of the oldest models in the company’s lineup in the local market. In that time it has seen many changes in the market. And yet the Wave 110 Alpha has stood the test of time. Its brand of affordability and versatility has not lost its appeal even by an inch. The diminutive underbone is almost identical to its original in shape. It now comes in two different flavors. The one with alloy wheels and the one with spoked wheels. At Php 44900 for the spoked version and Php 46800 for the spoked version, this is as bare bones as it gets. And yet it has everything that a daily commuter can ask from a workhorse. Honda has set the standard in the segment for many years now and the result is a bike that fits the bill perfectly. As a result, its design is copied incessantly by unheard of manufacturers. Then there is the competition from the likes of Suzuki Smash 115, Kymco Visar and Yamaha Sight. So how does this more than a decade old design still remain relevant? Let’s find out.

Design

This underbone requires no introduction. These are instantly recognizable on the road. Being a bike focused on utility on above everything else, there is not much to write about. However, the styling through the years has evolved to incorporate elements that improve its usability. The front is sharp without a hint of aggression. The clear style front turning indicators are integrated with the apron. This makes the design more refined while also making them less susceptible to damage. The rear still gets clear style turning indicators mounted on stalks, perhaps in an attempt to keep costs low. The headlight up front is now automatic. The side panels get some snazzy stickers that go very well with the two available color options. There is also a rear grab rail that along with the black exhaust brings in some much needed sportiness. The blacked out 17’ cast alloy wheels with 70/90 front and 80/90 rear tires add to its modern and compact looks. At 1897 mm long, 706 mm wide and 1092 mm tall, it wasn’t too big to begin with. The instrumentation is basic and analog as you’d expect at this price point. While it may not be the most stylish bike, it is very well made. Its build quality is as you’d expect from the Japanese giant and will probably outlast its rider.

Ride & Handling

Before discussing the suspension and the chassis, the seat deserves some attention. The seat is long, wide and comfortable and allows a lot of room for adjustability. The seat is 765 mm high which should not pose any problems to average height people. The handlebars are higher above the seat level giving the rider a very relaxed seating position. The suspension is conventional with a telescopic front fork setup and dual shock absorbers in the rear. The narrow dimensions and the short wheelbase of 1227 mm give it excellent maneuverability in dense traffic. The ground clearance of 135 mm means that it makes short work of road imperfections too.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

Powering the Wave 110 Alpha is an over head cam air cooled and carbureted 109 cc engine. The power output is a modest 7.57 ps at 7500 rpm and 8.54 Nm of torque at just 3500 rpm. The engine is Euro II compliant. It comes with both an electric and a kick starter for when the battery is running low. The engine is mated to a 4 speed constant mesh transmission. The small capacity engine delivers the majority of its grunt low down in the rev range giving it very good usability. It is not rare to find one of these underbones turned into a tricycle. Acceleration is decent for a sub 100 kg bike. The engine also succeeds in being very fuel efficient with up to 60 km/L figures within reach. Being a Honda the engine is also practically bulletproof.

Braking & Safety

There are mechanical leading trailing drum brakes on both ends as would be expected from a bike at this price point.

Verdict

It’s amazing how much value this bare bones basic underbone carries. Anyone looking for a basic mode of transportation already knows that this is one bike that they can choose with their eyes closed.

I have been using my Wave 110 Alpha as a work machine for well over 3 years and as you would expect from a Honda, it has never let me down in any way. I usually carry heavy loads on it, putting the engine under strain, and it still keeps going every time. Obviously, under load, the ride quality is Read More
