BeAT Pros & Cons

Things We Like in BeAT

The Honda Beat is blessed with a sleek design language, which is quite helpful for those who are new to the experience of riding a two-wheeler. The slim profile, as well as sharp design, makes it a compact scooter to handle in the toughest of urban riding duties

For an entry-level scooter, the Honda Beat has got an eye-catching design, which gives it a good road presence. The sharply designed front apron with pointy headlamps and black theme for alloy wheels and engine do indeed make the Honda Beat look sporty

With a telescopic front suspension setup and lean design, the Honda Beat is one agile scooter to handle. The brilliant chassis is supported by the presence of great tyres which provide excellent road grip to it in all conditions.

The four-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled, 110cc engine of the Honda Beat might be small, but with a maximum power output of 8.8 PS, it feels zippy and powerful on the go. Also, it is fuel-injected, so it feels quite refined and jerk-free as well

Things We Dont Like in BeAT

The slim and compact design of the Honda Beat does eat up a significant amount of under-seat storage space, which is too compact to store a full-face helmet in it.

Since this is an entry-level scooter, the Honda Beat is not too generously equipped with modern features. The scooter does come with a part digital instrument console, however, its layout looks too simple and dated by today’s standards

Recent Updates of Honda BeAT

The Honda BeAT is a great entry-level scooter and comes in a variety of flavours. You have the BeAT Fashion Sport (PHP 66,400 comes in blue, red, orange, black), BeAT Street (PHP 66,400 comes in black, grey and white) and lastly you have the BeAT Premium (PHP 69,900 comes in black and white). All variants are powered by a 110cc engine which makes 8.6 bhp and 9.2 Nm while being mated to a V-Matic automatic system. Highlights of the BeAT series include a stylish headlight design, semi-digital instrument panel, a sharp taillight design, eco indicator, tubeless tires, side stand switch, and 11-litre under-seat storage capacity. The BeAT goes up against the likes of the Yamaha Mio Soul i125.

There is no lack of options when it comes to picking commuter scoter in the Philippines. The 110cc Honda BeAT is certainly one of the better of these. The smallest scooter in Honda’s product line is aimed at the youth with many vibrant color options, affordable price, and recently updated features for 2019. Honda earlier had this scooter available with a carburetor since its launch in 2015. Come 2017 and new emission norms forced the company to launch a fuel injected version inconveniently named BeAT-FI eSP. At present the fuel injected variant is the only one available and thus the scooter is now called just the BeAT. Selling for Php 69900, the 2019 Honda BeAT competes against the Suzuki Address and the twin-headed terror of the Yamaha Mio Sporty and the Mio i 125.  Honda sells the bike in two different versions. There is the standard version and then the one equipped with CBS and ISS.

First of all, are the seven color options that this scooter comes with. Two of these called Nitric Orange and Space Magenta Metallic were introduced in 2017 in their latest update. The update also included other cosmetic changes including a semi-digital instrument display, new wheel, and tire design, new headlight and indicator combination cluster and new taillight brake and indicator cluster.  That headlight is now an angular multi-reflector unit that incorporates large indicators with a large automatic headlight that illuminates a large and wide patch when used. Overlapping panels seems to be the theme here with body color panels over black panels creating a striking contrast. Behind the front apron is a wide footboard. The seat is almost flat with a sporty grab rail at the end. The taillight is also similar to the front end and ties together the modern look very well. The scooter is made perfect for urban conditions with compact dimensions of 1856 mm (L) x 665 mm (W) x 1068 mm (W). The wheelbase is similarly small at 1256 mm. The scooter rides on 14”, 5 twin spoke cast alloy wheels with 80/90 wheels on the front and 90/90 wheels on the rear. Under the seat is an 11.2 L storage space that however cannot store a full face helmet. The instrument display is a large conventional analog speedometer with a thin digital display showing the rest of the information. It is backlit with an orange light but readability is not exactly the best.

Ride & Handling

The BeAT comes with conventional telescopic front forks in the front and unit swing in the rear that works well for the most part. But riders have to understand that this lightweight and compact scooter is not meant for speed. The suspension does not allow you to travel too fast or on bad roads. The seat is also just as thin as it looks. It is also firm and might lead you to invest in some padding. Still the ride, for the most part, is comfortable as long as ridden reasonably. The seating position is upright and relaxed thanks to the 740 mm seat height and high placed handlebars. The ground clearance of 146 mm makes it ready to go on any kind of road surface.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

Powering the 90 kg (dry) scooter is a 110cc air-cooled and fuel injected SOHC engine. Power output is rated at 8.55 hp at 7500 rpm while the torque figure comes to 9 Nm at 6000 rpm. While not exactly powerful, it has enough grunt to carry the rider and one passenger in a brisk fashion. Acceleration is also very usable in traffic stops. The engine is otherwise very quiet and refined. There are very few vibrations felt through the handlebars. The transmission uses a CVT which also gives it the AT part in its name. The engine comes with both electric and kick starter for emergencies. But the best thing about this engine is the fuel consumption figure. The lightweight scooter can easily manage more than 60 km per liter of fuel. This is in part also thanks to the Idle Stop-start system that switches off the engine after 3 seconds of idling., The system can also be turned off with a mere flick of a switch.

Braking & Safety

Braking is relegated to a hydraulic disc brake on the front and a drum brake on the rear. The scooter also gets Honda’s combi braking system that activates both the front and rear brakes when the left lever is pulled.

The BeAT is a small scooter that ticks all the right boxes for youngsters. It is a modern, stylish, refined and fuel efficient scooter. It might be a little more expensive than the Mio i 125. But it comes with Honda’s quality and refinement that is hard to match. But is that really worth the difference in price? Only you can decide.

    The typical benevolent Honda

The Honda Beat is a typical Honda product when it comes to an average Joe’s mind. It feels solidly built for a scooter of its price and size. The fit and finish as well as build quality is quite impressive, something which is hard to find and examine in an entry level scooter. Also, the aggressive bodywork as well as Read More
