UM DSR SM

The entry-level dual-purpose motorcycles are usually basic in terms of appearance, though that’s not the case with the UM DSR SM. This dual-purpose motorcycle looks fairly big for its size, and that’s down to its extensive and colorful-looking bodywork.

At the front, the UM DSR SM has a very small halogen headlamp, though the front face looks quite big due to the large cowl surrounding the headlamps and large-sized clear lens turn indicators flanking the front fascia of the motorcycle. The motorcycle looks purposeful for off-roading duties with its high-mounted front beak, which serves as the front fender, and the front fork covers at their bottom. These bits are also covered with loud graphics, which further raise the appeal of the motorcycle even more.

While the body panels on the side profile of the UM DSR SM look minimal, the loud graphics on them make the motorcycle look big and aggressive. The fuel tank shrouds and the plastic shield over the exhaust pipe look cool with the graphics setup, while the motorcycle looks like a proper off-roader with high ground clearance, spoke wheels, a flat single-piece seat, and an engine bash plate, and high-placed single-sided exhaust pipe. The engine and frame are exposed fully, just like in any other off-road motorcycle, while the spoke wheels here get contrasts pin-striping job around their circumference.

At the back, the UM DSR SM looks very minimalist with a small clear-lens LED tail lamp and a compact rear fender, the upper corners of which come attached with clear lens turn indicators. The instrument console of the UM DSR SM also looks as attractive as the rest of the motorcycle, despite not being the most modern set-up in the segment. This unit is a combination of an analog tachometer and an LCD panel for displays the speedometer, odometer, trip meters, fuel gauge, and gear indicator. The handlebar of the UM DSR SM is wide and high-mounted and gets minimal switchgear and premium-looking silver-finished levers.

To suit its character as a purposeful off-road motorcycle meant for city usage as well, the UM DSR SM gets a long-travel suspension setup comprising upside-down telescopic hydraulic forks at the front and adjustable mono-shock with a rectangular swing-arm at the rear. Riding on 100/80-17 and 130/70-17 off-road spec tires wrapped over 17-inch spoke wheels, the UM DSR SM gets a 300mm disc at the front and 218mm disc at the rear for braking purposes. For an entry-level 125cc dual-purpose motorcycle, the UM DSR SM feels nicely equipped and well-engineered in terms of mechanical components.

The UM DSR SM gets its power from a four-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled, 125cc engine, which is currently the smallest engine UM makes for a motorcycle. Paired to a 6-speed gearbox, this engine puts up 11 bhp of maximum power and 11 Nm of maximum torque, which are decent figures for a 125cc engine. Due to the low curb weight, the UM DSR SM pulls off strongly and has a good power delivery at lower city speeds.

While the UM DSR SM impresses with its premium mechanical hardware, it disappoints with its negligible safety features on board. However, the front fork protectors are nice additions for a motorcycle of this price.

With its extrovert design having loud body decals and color options and a well-sorted engine, suspension, and brake setup, the UM DSR SM has got its basics right – to some extent, even better than the bigger 200cc DSR II. The motorcycle is a perfect beginner's motorcycle for those who wish to start their journey of motorcycling with a dual-purpose motorcycle.
