BYD Seal 5 DM-i: curated colors

BYD Cars Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to further make electrified cars attainable by launching the Seal 5 DM-i.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What powers the BYD Seal 5 DM-i?

The BYD Seal 5 DM-i is powered by ann electric motor paired with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, which accts as its range-extender.
  • How much power does the BYD Seal 5 DM-i make?

Depending on the variant, the BYD Seal 5 DM-i can dish out anywhere from 117-194 hp.
  • The hybrid sedan comes with a base price of under P1 million and offers would-be owners a handful of upmarket features.

Zigwheels Philippines reported the official entry of the aforementioned into the country’s automotive arena. There, we talked about some of its noteworthy features, which could potentially sway car buyers who are eyeing segment staples like the Toyota Vios or Honda City.

But if you are having a hard time deciding on what color to get, here is a quick look at the four curated colors of the BYD Seal 5 DM-i.

    Quartz Blue

Quartz Blue perfectly encapsulates the hybrid nature of the BYD Seal 5 DM-i. The calm and restful color somehow relates to the quiet performance of the sedan.

Since BYD designed the Seal 5 DM-i with an electric vehicle (EV)-first approach, the main propulsion system is the permanent magnet synchronous motor situated on the car’s front axle. The 1.5-liter gasoline engine only works as a generator or a range extender to juice up the said electric power unit — pretty much like the technology used by the Nissan Kicks e-Power and the upcoming Changan Hunter Range Extended Electric Vehicle.

The electric motor can run on its own for approximately 115 kilometers (km) allowing for a quiet, smooth ride that is as efficient as it is enjoyable. With the range extender involved, the base model of the hybrid sedan can drive up to 1,175 km while the range-topping trim pushes the numbers to 1,240 km.

Since it does not rely on the internal combustion engine to move, the acceleration is felt quicker — making it a fun car to drive despite its supposed eco-friendly powertrain system.

    Harbour Grey

Gray is a color often related to wisdom and technology.

Those who have been following the brand know that BYD cars have some of the best technological offerings in the segment. Case in point, the Seal 5 DM-i’s rotating infotainment system.

First seen on models like the BYD Atto 3, Seagull, and — the Seal 5 DM-i’s bigger brother — Sealion 6 DM-i, the orientation of the infotainment unit can be customized to suit the needs of its owners.

A vertical orientation could be good for when navigation applications are in use such as Google Maps, Waze, and Apple’s Maps. Rotating the screen in portrait mode can help drivers get a better view of the road ahead as the said position improves the view of the map.

On the other hand, audio and music applications such as Spotify, YouTube Music, and Apple Podcasts are better when the orientation of the screen is vertical or in landscape mode.

The BYD Seal 5 DM-i’s infotainment screen (which is wireless Apple Carplay- and Android Auto-ready) is also capable of gesture controls. For those who worry about the lack of tactile buttons and knobs to quickly tweak the air conditioning unit on the go, swiping three fingers vertically or horizontally allows fast adjustment of the temperature and fan speed.

Complementing the BYD Seal 5 DM-i’s infotainment screen is a digital instrument cluster that feeds the driver the below information:

    • Speed
    • Battery level
    • Estimated range
    • Selected, engaged gear

Below, we have listed some of the other notable technological appointments of the BYD Seal 5 DM-i:

    • Power seats
    • Dual-zone automatic air conditioning
    • BYD smartphone application compatible
    • NFC card compatible

    Cosmos Black

The color black has always been associated with sportiness and performance, and the BYD Seal 5 DM-i lacks none of both.

According to the Ayala-led local subsidiary of the Chinese car manufacturer, the BYD Seal 5 DM-i generates anywhere from 117-194 horsepower with 316-325 Newton meters of torque, depending on the variant.

The BYD Seal 5 DM-i Dynamic can zoom from a standstill to 100 kilometers per hour in about 7.9 seconds. Those who will choose the top-of-the-line Premium variant can achieve the same acceleration speed in about 7.3 seconds.

BYD’s hybrid sedan also owes its performance to the Blade battery. The entry-level grade gets an 8.3 kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion phosphate battery while the top-tier model bumps the capacity to 18.3 kWh.

According to BYD Cars Philippines, the battery can be charged from zero to 100 percent in just about 3.5 hours using an alternating current charger.

    Arctic White

The BYD Seal 5 DM-i looks immaculate in white. In addition, it appears to be a safe car to drive as the achromatic color is usually associated with safety.

BYD packed its hybrid sedan with a robust list of safety features starting with the standard ones, which we have listed below:

    • Airbags
    • Seatbelts
    • Traction control
    • Controlled deceleration for parking brake
    • Anti-lock braking
    • Hydraulic brake assist
    • Electronic brakeforce distribution
    • Hill start control
    • Comfort braking
    • Tire pressure monitoring
    • Electronic anti-theft system

BYD also gave the Seal 5 DM-i a suite of advanced driver-assist technologies, which include a 360-degree view camera with a “see-through mode,” a suite of radars and sensors, as well as cruise control.

    Final thoughts

The four available colors of the BYD Seal 5 DM-i can cater to a wide range of consumers. Despite the somewhat conservative palette, these options can suit the needs of car buyers who want a stylish and tech-savvy daily driver that can help them enjoy a more sustainable lifestyle.
