The Mistubishi Strada: Picking up on safe and smart values

The pickup truck has evolved through the decades from a purely utilitarian, spartan workhorse into a refined daily driver with the added bonus of ability and capacity. That’s well and good during these days of the pandemic. Collision mitigation measures

When the vehicle senses an imminent collision, visual and auditory alerts are given by the Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) feature, which also automatically slows the vehicle down when no intervention is made. Meanwhile, to avoid being surprised by vehicles falling into the driver’s blind spot, a Blind Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist (BSW with LCA) alerts the driver of vehicles coming from behind on either side. On the other hand, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) warns the driver of an oncoming vehicle when the Strada is backing out of a parking spot.

Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System

To prevent throttle misapplication leading to sudden lurches, Mitsubishi equips the Strada with an Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System which “reduces the chance and severity of hitting obstacles 4m in front or behind when a driver mistakenly presses the accelerator when stationary or at speeds of up to 10kph.” The system includes a buzzer which sounds and a warning light that comes on in the dash if sensors detect a nearby obstacle. The system will automatically control engine output if the driver’s foot accidentally presses down on the accelerator. The Multi-Around Monitor also makes parking easier by providing guiding and expected course lines.

RISE body

Even the Strada’s body gives its passengers enhanced protection. While being lightweight, leading to improved performance and fuel efficiency, the Strada features extensive use of high tensile strength steel plates for greater safety in the event of a collision. The RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body is designed to absorb the impact so that forces are minimally transmitted to the occupants.

Other musts

To give the driver unparalleled control even in difficult situations, the Strada gets an anti-lock brake system with electronic brakeforce distribution for confident braking. Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control (M-ASTC) also prevents the skidding of the front or rear wheels. Whether going up or down an incline, the pickup gives unparalleled peace of mind through Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Hill Descent Control (HDC). Even when hauling something, the Strada will remain unflappable through Trailer Stability Assist (TSA)

Inside, depending on the variant, the Strada can get as many as seven SRS airbags — completing a shell of protection (Strada Athlete shown below).
