2020 Toyota Yaris to get the brand-new GA-B platform

MANILA: Toyota's sub-compact cars have seen the same platform underpin them for two-decades now. However, with the changing times, the Japanese automaker has finally decided to serve its sub-compact offerings with a new platform, the GA-B. According to reports, the brand-new GA-B platform will lay the foundation for the next-generation Yaris that will go on sale in the West. Following the Yaris, the GA-B platform is said to underpin the next-gen Vios and other Toyota models as well.

The GA-B platform will be the third member of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) family that already incorporates the likes of GA-C and GA-K platforms. While the GA-C platform underpins the C-HR and Corolla Altis, the Toyota vehicles such as Camry and RAV4 get the GA-K platform. Making the new GA-B platform special is the high rigidity, low production cost, low weight, and a lower centre of gravity due to the changed positioning of the driver's seat.

Moving on, the space inside the new Toyota cars that will be underpinned by the new GA-B platform won't be an issue courtesy of the long wheelbase and short overhangs. The most interesting part? Well, the brand-new GA-B platform is fit for both the internal combustion engine and all-electric powertrains. We can also call the GA-B platform a modular one as it can feature variable wheelbase, height, and different kinds of suspension setups.

Since we have used the terms electric powertrains, its worth mentioning that Toyota recently acquired 24,000,000 shares in Suzuki. Moreover, the other Japanese automaker is also set to get hold of an undisclosed number shares in Toyota worth 48 billion yen (around Php 23.75 billion). We understand that the major reason behind this new relationship is the development of autonomous driving and electrification of vehicles in conjunction with each other. As a result, the two automakers will not only save cost but also time on developing new tech that can then be used by both of them.
