MANILA: In light of the increasing fuel prices due to the conflict in Iran, President Ferdinand Macros Jr. has ordered the rollout of a fuel discount for public utility vehicles (PUV). Specifically, this provides a P10-per-liter discount for PUVs, capped at 150 liters per week over three months.

The DOTr will be spearheading a SCP for PUVs.As shared by the President, the aforementioned will begin to be offered on April 15, starting in the National Capital Region next week. The discount program for PUVs will kick off on legitimate fuel stations along Commonwealth Avenue, before expanding to Quezon Avenue, España, Zapote, A. Bonifacio, Rizal Avenue, and Marcos Highway. Plans are likewise being made for an eventual national rollout.
Apart from the fuel discount, the government’s measures will also include fare subsidies, as well as a Service Contracting Program (SCP) courtesy of the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
To note, the DOTr’s SCP is set to provide payments to drivers and operations. This, the President said, will range from P40 to P100 per kilometer. This will also go on top of what drivers and operators have earned from PUV fare.
Participating PUVs will be equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) monitoring device to ensure good service and reliable transport, even during off-peak hours.

For the commuter’s side, the government will also roll out up to 20 percent in fare discounts. It was implied by the President that the aforementioned will apply to crucial routes leading to “major bus corridors” and to routes linked to train lines.
As the President shared further, around 50,000 PUVs, 1,000 PUV operators, and 15 million commuters will benefit from the initiatives mentioned above.
One of the key reasons behind the aforementioned initiatives, the government says, is to mitigate the effects of increased transport costs. This comes amid the skyrocketing global price of oil, and if kept unchecked, could also lead to a domino effect on food prices and other basic goods in the long run.
