Honda highlights new AWD system for next-gen e:HEV
New AWD technology promises better handling and efficiency
MANILA: Honda is currently developing a new all-wheel-drive (AWD) system for the next-generation version of the e:hybrid electric vehicle (e:HEV) powertrain.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What are the advantages of the next-generation e:HEV AWD system?
Some advantages of the next-gen e:HEV AWD system include better traction and handling, more interior space, and better ride stability - among others. What all-wheel-drive (AWD) Honda vehicle is available in the Philippines?
One AWD Honda model sold in the Philippines is the CR-V VX Turbo. As shared by the carmaker, the new system will provide better synchronization with driver controls, improved traction in various types of terrain, as well as enhanced driving performance. All the aforementioned qualities of the new e:HEV AWD system will result in “a sophisticated and exhilarating driving experience.”
Contrary to the current and older Honda AWD systems, however, the new one forgoes the use of a propeller shaft in favor of a newly developed rear drive unit. The aforementioned motor will complement the main propulsion unit driving the front wheels, and by virtue of being an electric motor, will provide excellent torque delivery.
Honda also noted that by utilizing a rear electric motor, the car can exert finer control over driving force, thereby providing better stability on slippery surfaces or when launching from a standstill.
Paired with the next-gen e:HEV AWD system is a new traction control system (TCS), which will directly control the power output of the front and rear motors. The result is better grip control through its ability to redirect torque and power to the wheel that needs it the most, depending on the driving situation.

- Fuel efficiency
- Active drive force monitoring
- Faster traction control
- More stable cornering
The carmaker also noted that, due to the absence of a propeller shaft, the interior packaging of cars equipped with the upgraded e:HEV AWD system will offer improved interior space. After all, the lack of a propeller shaft results in a tunnel-less flat floor.
For now, the Japanese marque has yet to share when the new e:HEV AWD system is coming out, and on which vehicle. The brand’s website, however, has shown pictures indicating that the next-generation e:HEV is being tested on the Honda HR-V.

The aforementioned seven-seater model is not an e:HEV nameplate, and instead, it uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 gasoline mill with the following output figures:

Maximum power (in horsepower) |
187 |

Peak torque (in Newton-meters) |
