Hyundai Motor CEO appointed as Hydrogen Council co-chair

MANILA: Hyundai Motor Company Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President Jaehoon Chang was appointed as the new co-chairman of the Hydrogen Council.

Chang has joined Linde CEO Sanjiv Lamba as co-chair of the Hydrogen Council. The Hyundai executive also replaces Kawasaki Heavy Industries Limited Chairman Yoshinori Kanehana, who has been the group’s co-chair for the past two and a half years.  

The last time a Hyundai executive held the leadership post at The Hydrogen Council was in January 2019-July 2020 under Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung. 

As per Hyundai, Chang's appointment as co-chair of the Hydrogen Council comes at the right time. The company, after all, claims a strengthened position in the hydrogen sector thanks to its plan to expand its HTWO (H2) division. 

The aforementioned organization takes the lead in hydrogen automotive technology for Hyundai Motor Group, and its activities currently cover production, storage, transportation, and utilization of the alternative fuel. 

Besides the latter, the South Korean automaker has further expanded its involvement with hydrogen thanks to its continued production of the Xcient hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck, which it recently launched as a self-driving model for the US market. 

The marque further shared its creation of the first dedicated fuel-cell electric vehicle in 2018 through the Hyundai Nexo crossover. 

For the uninformed, the Hydrogen Council is a CEO-led global consortium aiming to create a future economy based on environmentally friendlier hydrogen fuels. Under Chang and Lamba, the group will work to formulate frameworks for international trade and accelerated investment in hydrogen.
