New year, new ride: Hyundai Accent

Buzz about the revival of the Hyundai Accent surfaced sometime last year after the Land Transportation Office released homologation papers for the nameplate. 

Those following the motoring beat will know that the model was discontinued a few years back. It became popular as an entry-level sedan and soon became the car of choice for young professionals, and thereafter, ride-hailing and transport network vehicle service operators.

On that note, here are the details shared by the country’s land transport bureau about the Hyundai Accent. 

Dimensions

It will ride on wheels that measure 15 or 16 inches with either 185/65 or 205/55 tires — depending on the variant. 

Powertrain

Under the hood of the yet-to-be released Hyndai Accent is a 1.5-liter gasoline engine. The said powerplant can help the sedan achieve a top speed of 190 kilometers per hour. 

Variants

According to the documents issued by the government agency, the Hyundai Accent for the Philippine market will come in two variants: Standard and Premium.

In other markets (India and Vietnam), the Hyundai Accent is alsoo known as the Verna and offers the following features:

• Leather upholstery 
• Ambient lighting 
• Smart electric sunroof 
• Eight-10.25-inch infotainment system

Final thoughts 

At the time of writing, Hyundai Motor Philippines Incorporated has yet to confirm the arrival of the Accent. But if we follow the pattern the company has been on as of late, it seems they are keen on reviving old nameplates such as the Kona and Venue. 

The return of the Hyundai Accent could signal the brand’s re-entry into the economy segment, as most of the brand’s cars appear to be positioned to target the upmarket buyers.
