Next-gen Toyota GT86 may Share Mazda MX-5 Platform
MANILA: The folks of Toyota must have their hands on deck with so much going under the shelter of the brand. With the launch of Hilux, introduction of new engine for the Land Cruiser Prado, another new development comes up that speaks of Toyota testing the MX-5 platform, and if approved will underpin its new-generation GT86 on the same, according to Motoring AU's source. The same source reports that the situation for Toyota is difficult because the world's largest car-maker is in the final stages of development for its new rear-drive sports car chassis.
If this sports car of Toyota sits on the Mazda's platform then it will be a lighter and smaller layout that would be powered by a compact turbocharged engine. The details of the engine are still in dark although, it is possible for Toyota to get its hands on Mazda's SkyActiv direct injection fuel technology as well.
Initially, the 86 will be receiving a mid-cycle update which is supposed to arrive in April 2016. It will feature a rear long end with relocated exhaust pipes and redesigned front end. The chassis will be strong enough to provide agility and improved handling while the engine will be boosting 211 PS of power.
This agreement between the best automobile companies of the world will be looked upon by the masses wherein a lot of innovation and update is expected because sharing of resources and technologies increase the benefits in multiple.
