MANILA: San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has given toll-free access to marked government vehicles used for relief and recovery operations in areas affected by Typhoon Uwan.

    According to SMC Chairman and Chief Executive Office Ramon Ang, the company’s toll operations teams are coordinating closely with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) to facilitate the implementation of the President’s order.

    To note, SMC Infrastructure manages the following expressways:

    • Skyway System
    • South Luzon Expressway
    • Southern Tagalog Arterial Road Tollway
    • Tarlac–Pangasinan–La Union Expressway
    • Ninoy Aquino International Airport Expressway

    “Our priority is to make sure responders get to affected communities as quickly as possible,” Ang said.

    “We have always worked with the government in times of calamity. It’s part of our responsibility to help and to make sure aid reaches those who need it,” he added.

    In a statement, SMC shared that tollway personnel have been deployed across its expressways to assist emergency convoys and to ensure their safe and uninterrupted use of tollways.

    Prior to the typhoon’s landfall, the company’s maintenance crews have been deployed to check drainage systems, secure roadside signages and billboards, and preposition quick-response teams and heavy equipment in flood-prone areas to keep expressways passable.

    It can be recalled that during the COVID-19 pandemic, SMC waived more than P230 million worth of toll fees for frontliners in all its expressways.
