The electric job: Classic Minis to be equipped with modern electric motor

MANILA: Sustainable driving is now being developed in a classic car, thanks to a dedicated team at Mini Plant Oxford in United Kingdom. In the spirit of a circular economy, an electric motor for the original Mini combines tradition with cutting-edge technology.

The Mini Recharged project is an opportunity to recount the story of the classic Mini in the 21^st century. The idea was born even before the launch of the Mini Electric. In 2018, a one-of-a-kind Mini Electric was manufactured and displayed at the New York Auto Show. Car enthusiasts were so impressed that a dedicated team from Mini Plant Oxford decided to create a plan to give a similar offer to those who own a classic Mini.

The original petrol engine of the classic Mini is replaced by a modern electric drive, allowing buyers to experience traditional go-kart dynamics with an emission-free drivetrain. This concept involved careful consideration of the car’s heritage, making it possible to restore the classic Mini to its original state in the future. The original engine of each car was marked and stored after the conversion so that it can be utilized for future retrofit of the classic Mini.

“What the project team is developing preserves the character of the classic Mini and enables its fans to enjoy all-electric performance. With Mini Recharged, we are connecting the past with the future of the brand,” Mini Brand Head Bernd Korber stated.

The modern electric motor churns out 90kW and makes the classic Mini capable of accelerating from zero to 100kph in about nine seconds. The energy is provided by a high-voltage battery, with a capacity of up to 6.6kW and an estimated range of around 160 km. A special central instrument cluster now indicates the drive temperature, selected gear, range, and speed.

The bespoke upcycling of the classic Mini is exclusively available in the UK. Each unit is given an individual number, making it unique.

Mini Global Brand Management Head Sebastian Beuchel said, “Individuality also plays an important role with Mini Recharged. Unique classic Mini models have always been created, including true works of art on wheels. That's why future collaborations are also planned as part of the Mini Recharged program, allowing well-known artists to express their creativity with specially designed classic Mini models.”
