The truth behind Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S record at Nurburgring

MANILA: The 22 kms long Nurburgring track is often the place where car manufacturers like Nissan, Honda, Porsche, Audi, BMW, Lamborghini and others sweat it out to prove the mettle of their street-legal production cars. The ultimate lap record at the moment belongs to the Porsche 919, but that is a proper race car. The automakers choose different segments and try to own the records with the performance of their vehicles.

Recently, Mercedes head out to the Nurburgring with their 4-door coupe variant of the GT 63 S. Now, they’re claiming that they have set a new lap record for a 4-door production car of 7:25:41. The car gained top speeds of 298 kmph on track. And throughout the 22 kms, it was mostly over 250 kmph. The GT 63 S even did corners at well over 200 kmph.

While on the track, the suspension settings were set to be most aggressive, allowing a very responsive throttle. The AMG GT 63 S featured an electronic differential, rear steering, and all-wheel-drive system as well. Optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres were also used while trying to set a new record. However, Mercedes-AMG is insisting that the car used was a standard model and no tunings were altered in order to achieve the feat.

But, the lap timing of 7:25:41 is actually not the fastest yet, and other production models have achieved a much quicker lap time in the past. Nissan GT-R in 2011 did a lap time of 7:24.22 and Porsche 911 Carrera GTS in 2017 did a 7:24. Although the Nissan GT-R and the Porsche 911 Carrera are 2+2 cars, they can, however, fit 4 people in. Which demolishes the latest record of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S.
