Top car brand in the US isn't American

MANILA: Toyota emerged as the best-selling automaker in the US in 2021.

The auto giant sold a total of 2,332,262 vehicles, 10.4% higher versus the previous year. Toyota and Lexus units were included in the total, with 2,027,786 and 304,476 units respectively.

General Motors, which claimed the top spot since 1931, moved a total of 2,218,228 units in 2021, reflecting a 12.9% decline versus the previous year.

Toyota’s US sales were led by RAV4 with a total of 407,739 units sold. The pickup overtook the brand’s popular models like the Camry, Tacoma, and Highlander.

The Camry also remained to be the best-selling passenger car in the US for the 20^th year in a row, while the RAV4 was named as the best-selling sports utility vehicle (SUV) for the fifth year in a row.

This feat is all the more remarkable for Toyota and other carmakers, given the global semiconductor chip shortage, which was identified as a serious concern for the automotive industry in 2021.
