Toyota received the most number of patents among carmakers in 2021

MANILA: According to an annual ranking by the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO), Toyota earned the most number of patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office among carmakers in 2021.

Toyota’s engineers and scientists received a total of 2,753 patents in 2021, many of which were for battery research to enable vehicle electrification, as well as other areas such as automated driving systems, artificial intelligence, materials, and other mobility-related inventions. Toyota has been the top-ranked carmaker in this study for the eighth year in a row.

In a statement, Toyota Motor North America General Counsel, Chief Legal Officer, and Chief Diversity Officer Sandra Phillips-Rogers said, “We are delighted to be recognized as a global technology leader as evidenced by the many patents issued to Toyota. The number of issued patents is a testament to Toyota’s vast R&D efforts and the team members who bring these technologies to life.”

In parallel, Toyota Motor North America Intellectual Property Counsel and Patent Licensing Director Frederick Mao stated, “This year’s patent list represents our efforts with respect to vehicle electrification, as evidenced by pioneering battery technology, as well as new IP to support Toyota’s transition into a mobility company.”

For many years, Toyota has been a pioneer in the automobile industry by investing in cutting-edge research and development. Toyota invests over US$1 million in new technology per hour and over US$1 billion in R&D related to automated vehicles and robotics since 2017.
