Dongfeng Nissan debuts NX8 midsize BEV, REEV SUV

MANILA: Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company, a China-based joint venture between Nissan Motor Corporation and Dongfeng Motor Corporation, has debuted the NX8 midsize sport utility vehicle (SUV). 

According to Nissan, the aforementioned five-seater electric vehicle (EV) was designed specifically for the Chinese market. It is touted as the “ideal SUV for every family,” thanks to its advanced safety technologies and an abundance of creature comforts and space.

Powertrain

The Dongfeng Nissan NX8 was developed on an 800-volt architecture fitted with ultra-fast “5C” charging. These components provide the vehicle a maximum range of 650 kilometers (km) from a single full charge, and the ability to recover around 300 km of range by charging in just six minutes. 

Additionally, the NX8 also has a lineup of range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) variants with an electric-only range of 310 km, and a total range of 1,450 km. 

At the moment, no output figures have been provided for the EV, and the REEV was disclosed on Nissan’s official global press page, but Dongfeng Nissan says the EV version can generate up to 335 hp, whereas the REEV can put out 265 hp. 

Notably, the Dongfeng Nissan NX8 EV uses a single permanent magnet synchronous motor, while the NX8 REEV combines an electric motor with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. 

Exterior

Where styling is concerned, the Dongfeng Nissan NX8 wears the usual midsize SUV silhouette. This, however, goes together with sleek lines with no visible sharp corners. It has a closed-off front grille, flush door handles, and a relatively high roof. 

For its front section, the model comes with “Eagle Eye” headlamps paired with a 2.4-meter-long “Star Ring” LED daytime running lamp strip. Its rear section, on the other hand, was fitted with the “Quantum Light Curtain” taillight bar. Up top, the model has a panoramic sunroof. 

Interior

Inside the Dongfeng Nissan NX8 is a five-seater layout that was kitted out with plenty of high-tech creature comforts and amenities. 

For starters, the model gets the standard premium SUV fare, which means automatic air-conditioning, leather upholstery, and very versatile seats that can be positioned in a variety of ways to optimize space. 

But on top of those, the model also gets what Dongfeng Nissan has described as the “Zero-Pressure Cloud Blanket Large Sofa 2.0,” an artificial intelligence (AI) television, and the “double-door AI smart refrigerator.” 

Notably, the Zero-Pressure Cloud Blanket Large Sofa 2.0 is the NX8’s rear seat, featuring active flank and posture adjustment, ventilation and heating, electronic adjustability, a memory function, and a 133-degree reclined position for extra relaxation. 

The model’s AI Television, meanwhile, is a five-display array consisting of dual 15.6-inch central displays, a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, a 63-inch head-up display, and a rear extended screen. All of these are controlled by AI and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chipset, while utilizing the Nissan Operating System 2.0. 

The AI smart refrigerator, on the other hand, comes with a 6.33-liter storage capacity, dual doors, and automatic item detection. At maximum, this component can be kept cool by as much as negative six degrees Celsius, or kept warm at up to 55 degrees Celsius. 

Other key interior components of the Dongfeng Nissan NX8 include, but are not limited to: 

• Motion sickness prevention technology 2.0
• Contactless air-conditioning airflow
• 25-piece surround sound system with Dolby Atmos
• Wireless smartphone charging pads

Safety

While boasting a versatile interior with a host of high-tech comfort amenities, the Dongfeng Nissan NX8 was also equipped with a range of safety features. And yes, these are also dependent on the vehicle’s AI package. 

Some of the nameplate’s advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS) include, but are not limited to: 

• Forward collision warning
• Automatic emergency braking
• Emergency lane assist
• Lane departure prevention
• Lane departure warning
• Rear-collision warning
• Rear-collision automatic braking
• Blind-spot warning
• Driver monitoring system

Availability

As established above, the Dongfeng Nissan NX8 is a Chinese market model, and it doesn’t appear that Nissan will be selling it in other countries anytime soon. 

For reference, however, the NX8 will retail somewhere between ¥159,900-¥209,900. At current exchange rates, that’s approximately P1.405 million-P1.845 million.
