Toyota TJ Cruiser Concept could very soon become a reality

MANILA: Toyota previewed the TJ Cruiser Concept about two years ago, and the automobile space and enthusiasts welcomed the probable successor of the ever so popular FJ Cruiser with arms wide open. Well, it was quite understandable for love to spill out because of the TJ Cruiser Concept flaunting an FJ Cruiser-like retro design philosophy and an array of modern technologies. However, the million-dollar question was, "will Toyota eventually roll out a production model of the TJ Cruiser Concept?".

So, what does the present scenario tell us? Will there be a production model of the Toyota TJ Cruiser Concept? Well, guess what? The TJ Cruiser Concept is going to become a reality sooner than later. Going by the reports and rumours, the Japanese auto giant will start producing the TJ Cruiser very soon, and it could be the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show in October, later this year where the production model makes its first appearance. Moreover, Toyota is said to start accepting bookings for the TJ Cruiser by the end of 2019.

Unlike the FJ Cruiser, which was a ladder-frame vehicle, the all-new Toyota TJ Cruiser will be underpinned by a car platform. Therefore, the successor of the Toyota FJ Cruiser will fall in the crossover category, for all good reasons. It will be the Toyota New Global Architecture that will lay the foundation for the all-new TJ Cruiser.

Yes, the TNGA is the same platform that underpins the likes of the Camry, Corolla, RAV4, and Prius. Speaking of the dimensions of the Toyota TJ Cruiser, the to be crossover should stand at around 4300 mm long, 1800 mm wide, and 1600 mm tall. Whether the production model of the TJ Cruiser will be a five- or seven-seater offering,

remains a mystery for now. On to the powertrain, we do not have any substantial information about the engine options. However, considering Toyota's recent achievements and developments in hybrid technology, the all-new TJ Cruiser might also feature a hybrid powertrain.

So, all we can do now is wait for the gates of the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show to open and see whether the Toyota TJ Cruiser makes its way to the grand event or not. Come early October 2019, come early.
