Toyota updates anti-SUA system for Japan-market units
MANILA: Toyota is upgrading its system to prevent SUA (sudden unintended acceleration) with the launch of Pedal Misapplication Acceleration Control System II.
Two years since the first version was introduced, it had prevented 70% of all accidents caused by accelerator misapplication, but new technologies necessitated an update in order to further reduce collisions in cases where the ICS (Intelligent Clearance Sonar) did not obstacles.
In the development of the second version, Toyota analyzed accidents caused by throttle misapplication, focusing more on instances when the pedal was pressed fully. Data from these situations are compared with info from Toyota connected vehicle. This was how the function setting was developed to reduce the number of incidents caused by accidental accelerator use even when there were no obstacles.
Suppression acceleration will now also work when the vehicle is in reverse, and even if there is no obstacle.
Another new safety feature being introduced is the Plus Support system. It is activated immediately as soon as the doors are unlocked using the Plus Support Smart Key. It works together with the ICS and Pedal Misapplication Acceleration Control System II to suppress acceleration during throttle mishandling. Plus Support will not be activated if the vehicle is unlocked using a conventional key.
These new developments are not exclusive to Toyota vehicles as the automaker has shared the operational logic of acceleration suppression with other vehicle manufacturers.
