Volkswagen claims New EA288 TDI engines with no defeat devices
MANILA: The German Automaker, Volkswagen has announced that the EA288 inline-four diesel engines do not have the “defeat device”. So, Volkswagen is not going to recall the vehicles that come installed with the turbocharged EA288 diesel engine. The company also revealed that both the Euro5 and Euro6 variants of the engine are clean and problem free.
This shows that the new engine follows the emission standards and regulations as per the European Union. It is quite beneficial to Volkswagen as the vehicles that are on sale at present come powered by the new EA288 TDI engine. However, the EA189 TDI family will have to face the Scandal charges as most of the VW cars are powered by this engine.
The new EA288 TDI engine is based on the infamous EA189 engine that shares common displacement, cylinder space and stroke ratio. Meanwhile, the company had also released an action plan in order to refit the affected vehicles and present them according to the current emission regulations. The automaker reveals that the vehicles are safe to drive but provides false emission ratings.
Presently, around 11M vehicles worldwide having the emission defeating device have been recalled by Volkswagen and the company has spend an estimated amount of EUR 6.5B to correct both hardware and software on the affected vehicles that are powered by EA189 TDI engines.
