Seiko PH releases limited-time Honda Motocompo-inspired timepiece

MANILA: Seiko Philippines released a limited-time wristwatach inspired by the Honda Motocompo.

Per the local wing of the Japanese watchmaker, the brand’s newest release takes cues from the iconic design of the ultra-compact, foldable motorcycle. As such, some details of the timekeeper pay homage to its source subject.

Seiko 5 Sports HDB010K1 Motocompo Limited Edition details

Watch enthusiasts are used to reference names that are a mouthful, and the Seiko 5 Sports HDB010K1 Motocompo Limited Edition is a moniker that is pretty straightforward.

Some of the Honda Motocompo inspirations can be found on the yellow dial, which carries the “HONDA” writing as well as the “MOTOCOMPO” lettering in a retro-futuristic, dot-matrix font style. 

The crown is also engraved with “TURN,” which was inspired by the fuel cock of the motorcycle it was based on. In addition, the included strap is marked with “CARRYING POINT” and “INSERTION POINT,” echoing the two-wheeler’s attachment points.

On Seiko Philippines’ website, the timepiece is shown with a box with the Honda Motocompo motorbike printed on it. Shipping the watch in the said case cements its limited-edition status since most timepieces from the brand usually comes with a plain carton.

The Seiko 5 Sports HDB010K1 Motocompo Limited Edition is built on the brand’s most affordable automatic field watch. Shown here is the writer’s own Field GMT reference number SSK 023.

It has a stainless steel case that measures 36.4 millimeters (mm), which would make it ideal for most wrist sizes. The thickness of 12.5 mm and lug width of 44.4 mm makes it a joy to wear.

The crystal is curved hardlex — Seiko’s proprietary crystal — and has very little to no distortions. As such, checking the time will not be a challenge.

Even in dark conditions, the lumibrite on the hands and indexes help the wearer tell the time. However, these reflective materials are applied sparsely (unlike some of Seiko’s entry-level dive-style watches), appearing only as dots above the Arabic numerals.

Nevertheless, the majority of the hour and minute hands get plenty of lumibrite material. The tip of the seconds hand also gets its fair share of the reflective coating.

Heading on to the back, the Seiko 5 Sports HDB010K1 Motocompo Limited Edition has a see-through screw-down caseback with the “LIMITED EDITION” marking and the serial number seen on it.

Under which is the caliber 4R36 movement with a power reserve of approximately 41 hours and offers the additional complication of a day and date display.

The watch retails for P27,500.
